Hello Everyone!

I was recently confronted with a situation at work and would love to hear people's thoughts/advice.

Bit of b/g - I've had AA since I was about 13 (as far as I can remember) and the disease has steadily progressed to where I've stopped treatment a while ago and have just about lost all of my hair (barring some on my knuckles? lol)

Generally, being a guy most people assume I just shave my head (and I don't really bother to correct them, lest awkwardness ensues) and I wear eyebrow wigs. Do most people notice that I have alopecia? I'm not sure...I'm sure if they look closely they would.

Recently at work I was at a dinner and my colleagues saw my driver's license and saw my head full of hair and asked when I started shaving and why I decided to do so. I thought about it for a while and decided to not get into alopecia (mistake in hindsight?) and just tell them I started shaving my head since I started losing hair.

Just curious to know if others would have handled the situation differently? I feel like bringing up alopecia sometimes makes other people so awkward that they don't know what to say or how to react, even if you bring it up jovially.

If I was a guy, I may not say more than that.

I was working for a different company when mine fell out (then later all grew back!) and I really didn't tell anyone what was going on. I just told a couple of people that I was okay and they didn't need to worry. Maybe if I had been closer to them I would have said more - but I really wasn't.

Mine is coming out again, and this time, I'm closer with the people I work with. If it gets to the point where I need to cover my head/shave, I think I'll let them in on what's going on.

Thanks for the reply - that makes sense!

And glad to hear that your hair is growing back! Just out of curiosity, do you feel like there were any life or lifestyle changes that were concurrent with the regrowth?

Cheers

When it grew back before, I had removed all artificial sweeteners from my diet.

I still don't touch them, so this time around, I'm not really sure if there's anything I can cut out to make it stop. I eat a lot healthier than I used to - but it doesn't seem to help any.

Hi Hairloss, I too am a male 50 yoa. I had AU when I was 5 and it grew back at about age 7. I had bald spots here and there but was pretty much in remission until age 45. Now in the past 5 years I have lost (AU) and regrown once and I am again AU. Weird! I too get looks at work because of my ever changing appearance. What bothers me the most is my lack of eyebrows. You mentioned "eyebrow wigs" where do you find those? Anyway, good luck to everybody on their journey and thanks to web sites like this, we are not alone.

Hi Nick,

For the eyebrow wigs - try headcovers.com. I think they are pretty decent.

I hear you , sometimes I wonder if it's the constantly changing appearance that throws people off more than the actual AU look. I started work with hair and patchy facial hair and now there is none. It sort of works out that I work with various project teams so I'm never with the same group of people for more than a few months.

Did you ever end up metioning AU to your co-workers?
