Can diet really cure alopecia (particularly androgenetic alopecia)?

Here's the story: all my sisters have androgenetic alopecia, and I was the last one to get it since I was the youngest of all of us. However, what I've noticed that one of my older sisters (I don't see her very much) has grown her hair back. I'm flabbergasted. I mean she really had bad thinning hair - so bad that people pointed it out and you could see her thinning hair from miles away.

Now she has gorgeous hair, and I asked her how could it be possible since there's virtually no treatment for her alopecia. She completely changed her diet - I mean she completely eliminated gluten and started eating a LOT of protein - and her hair is back to how it was before she got alopecia. She also used oils (those oils that you apply to your hair to supposedly stimulate hair growth) and wow....her hair is so much thicker than my hair.

Does anyone have this similar situation? I'm going to try changing my diet like how she did and see how it goes. However I will not keep my hopes high as it may not work for everyone...

In my circumstance also I had to change my diet to fix my alopecia. My blood tests showed that I was low in B12 and iron ferritin.  Once I rectified this my hair started to grow again.  I ended up being AU for a year so my hair regrowth is slow but it is happening.  I totally believe in changing your diet but make sure you get a good balance of vitamins and minerals.  Getting your doctor to do some blood tests for any deficiencies first would be a good idea.  Good luck!

That's what I'm thinking. I plan to visit a doctor to have my vitamins and minerals to be checked and see if I need to do any rectification.

I have to admit it: I did not eat healthy at all in my childhood. I never ate fruits or vegetables - most of my diet is composed of sugar - so that might account for my androgenetic alopecia.

Lilac I strongly recommend it.  Your doctor should test for a lot of things but make sure they test for B12, iron ferritin, vitamin D and folate.  Do some research of your own before you go because then the Doctor will know that they can't fob you off, which they seem to do once you talk about hair loss.  I went through this for 2 years and I ended up being AU, it annoys me sometimes that I was left to find the answer myself.
