Hello there.
I was diagnosticated with AA about 7 months ago and now i have like 10cm patches on down side back of my sculp (lucky me nobody can notice for now only if i tie my hair),The dermatologist told me it was caused by stress. I've tried 2 different treatments:
The 1st one make me itchy and had to stop, and the 2nd one i just lost interest in it.
I'm from Portugal and 2 months ago i traveled to Paris and start noticing that my AA was getting a lot worse. I went to a pharmacy and they gave me ALOPEXY (Minoxidil 2%)
doesnt make me any colateral effects and in right side is growing and left side fell off after starting the treatment (1month ago).
I've read your posts and can somebody explain to me how to know if my AA can turn into a AT or AU?
If i stop treatment can it progress even more?
Cumpliments

I don't know that anyone has this answer for you. Gene research lately says if you have 16 of the gene markers, it is likely you may get AT or AU. But who can afford a gene study? When I was in my 40s and had had AU and AT for a few years, my dermatologist said that at my age (then), when hair has been gone so long, it is likely it won't come back. I decided then and there to stop the ridiculous, uninsured, expensive and demeaning shots, and just get on with life in nice wigs. Lately, I have also taken the wig off when traveling or with friends.
It is up to you on your own pain threshold, expenses, and treatment choices. It is all a gamble, as AA spots (I was told) usually start growing back in three months without treatment anyway. I didn't like the pain or side effects of prednisone, cortisone, creams, shots, etc....so I am letting nature do what it will. It is just the luck of the genes. My luck is currently AT.
Hey Vanessa,
Its very hard to say. Alopecia is just so unpredictable and its very hard to say whether you will stay AA or progress. Try looking into option just in case and wait and see what happens.
Hi Vanessa,
I am a hair and scalp specialist, and would not reccomend the minoxidil for your treatment, it is the incorrect treatment for Alopecia Areata. I sell an ayurvedic herbal therapy which worked for my alopecia 5 years ago. It inspired me to make this my career. You can get my contact information and read my full story at www.alopeciacure.com
P.S. Typically, with AA, if you have it for a full year, without it turning into AT/AU, it more than likely will not.
Warm regards,
Holly
Ive had AA for about a year and 4 months now started off with one small patch then it grew bigger then I got a few other smaller patches around my head... around 9 months into having alopecia it all grew back apart from the first larger patch which im still unfortunately waiting to grow ...all I could say is you need to give it time everyone says theres remedys and treatments and ways around it but there really isnt everyone reacts differently to what you may use it could get worse or could get better thats a risk you would have to take yourself I personally have tried so many things to "cure" it since alopecia areata can grow back but it has not been very helpful to be honest...the best thing you can be is patient its a slow process for some but one thing I have relized is that for many people stress is a big factor I got mine from stress while taking exams at university was under alot of pressure with work and stuff so my best advise for you would be relax give it time be as patient as possible because at the end of the day if there really was a treatment to all this...no one would have alopecia...regarding AA turning into AT or AU im not sure since ive only ever had AA but if you havnt lost alot of hair within them 7 months im guessing it might just grow back but theres nothing to say that you may get it later in life and could get worse because some people I have spoken to have gotten it more than once and it did get worse for them but dont be to worried because for alot of people (around 90% of people who have had AA which I have spoken to) they got it once and it all grew back then they never got it again I guess only time will tell
