Hi All,
I have been going bald slowly for most of my life. Inheirited from my paternal grandmother. Anyway, recently i got tired of pretending that other ppl didn't notice; and, that the way i pulled it up trying to hide it wasn't PAINFUL. So i went with a friend to her hairdresser (very expensive) and had my hair cut down to about 2 inches in length. It was quite a shock seeing how much of my hair wasn't left. Well after the shock started wearing off, i decided to check out some full wigs. As luck would have it, there's a beauty supply outlet store, that i have driven past a thousand times and never saw, just about 1/4 of a mile from here. I went with a couple of supportive neighbors (for feedback) to see what they had; and, ended up buying 2 short synthetic wigs to get me started. This is all such a painful transition. I'm lucky to have a few friends cheering me on. My question now is: what's it generally cost to have an experienced hairdresser trim your wig for you? I tried calling one place; but, they wanted to see what i was talking about. I just need the bangs trimmed/styled. Any experiences to share?

Free to $15 if you bought the wig there (at least, in CA). Go to a wig-trained stylist, not just a real hair shop. The latter can be a disaster, and there is no fix once it is done.
It depends on how long it takes. Depending on the type of wig, a normal stylist could do it. Synthetic, I would bring to a wig stylist. Human hair, bring it to someone you trust who feels comfortable doing it. I was a stylist, and I have my friend ( who is also a stylist) do my hair, and she does a fantastic job. I now do my hair myself ( cuts, color and highlights) and it has turned out good.
Styling wigs should not be a part of passing the state board exam in my opinion. Not enough people wear them to make it worth it.
I have a drag queen cut my wigs! He has AMAZING wigs that he uses for his costumes and knows his stuff when it comes to cutting and styling wigs. He was also a great help in teaching me how to draw on my eyebrows when I lost them.
Well, that's a very creative solution. Would never have thought of it. I suspect i could get some good tips on how to hide gray sideburns under a brown wig (one of the few areas of hair that is still growing like crazy, of course:)
My naturally-brunette hair turned white after AU. I kept trying to dye my white sideburns brown at $10 per month, but the white roots came in too fast and it was obvious. So, I decided to go blond with dark roots with my wig (color SS 14/88). Now, the white sideburns are not noticeable, and the dark roots of the wig match my eyebrows. No more dying needed, and everything looks natural!
I have enjoyed learning to trim and customize my own wigs. I have ruined a few wigs in the process, but I am getting better at it.
Good luck whatever you decide!
It is true that an inexperienced stylist can ruin a synthetic wig. The hair does not act like human hair when you cut it. Fringe and hair in front of the ears is not so difficult to shorten, but completely restyling a synthetic wig is difficult at best, and Iwouldn't have anyone try to do that. My stylist and I have sort of experimented and learned together; for that reason, she only charges me a nominal fee.
