Hi Everyone,  I started on cyclosporine (200mg/day) and Olux-E foam (0.05%) 9 weeks ago and I'm starting to see little black tufts of hair all over my scalp. Trying not to get too excited but this is the first new hair growth I've had in about 5 years.  My derm said if it was going to work it would take 4 - 6 months.  I wonder how many of you out there have tried this combo with any success?

I started cyclosporine about 5 months ago, had tufts of hair in places, and some got long enough to put in a ponytail, but the rest of my head stayed bald so far, also my pharmacy gave me the wrong script last month and the hair that had grown back fell out.. im prescribed cyclosporine modified and they gave me just cyclosporine.. I had taken all of it and went in for a refill and that's when they told me.. they also said it's the same thing, but it is not.. bummed me out, back to square one :(

Oh, that's just not fair.  Why does growing hair back always have to be so hard?  Good luck with your next round.   I sure hope I get to keep my new growth but according to my dermatologist, there are no guarantees.

I got all my hair back two times with cyclosporin only. I have AU, but this treatment made even my eyelashes regrow. It happened in less than 3 months both times. The problem was that my kidneys were adversely affected. My creatine levels rose so we had to quit the treatment before my hair even got long enough to go without a wig. I did get a few weeks without false lashes. My doctor is encouraged because that worked and thinks there may be another drug that will work, but I've been on orencia infusions for almost 6 months and have not grown any hair. The orencia has made my nails strong again, however. Without treatment, they shed and are very painful. It must be doing something, but not enough. I have to pay $1800 out of pocket for each monthly infusion because my insurance won't pay for it. I don't want to give up too soon, but I can't keep paying that much without results.

Wow. That is so much money to spend without guaranteed results.  I'm seeing my specialist on Thursday.  He'll do another blood test to see how my kidneys are handling the cyclosporine. My hair is growing back like crazy - it's been 4 months now - and I so hope I can keep it.  I still have some small bald patches so I'd like to keep taking the drug for another round if possible.  I assume I can keep using the Olux-E regardless, so that's good.  You might want to talk to your doctor about that one.   It's a topical cortisone foam.  It works like the injections, but without the injections.  It's also a bit pricy but nothing close to $1800/month.  I have no idea which of these drugs is causing my hair to grow back, or maybe it's a combo, but whatever it is, it's definitely working.  It's keeping it that will be the trick.  Best of luck Merry.

I am so happy for you Cheri! I hope that you can continue on your treatment. I had my last infusion on Jan. 15. I saw my doctor on Jan. 20 and we decided to stop the infusions since my hair is not responding. I am going to suggest the combo you have used to my dermatologist. Thanks for sharing. Please keep me updated on your treatment.

Hi Merry,
Sorry to hear your treatment didn't work out. What a huge waste of money. My treatment continues to do very well. Lots of re-growth and no adverse effects to my kidneys so far.
Best of luck.

Hi Cheri

The dual approach of Cyclosporine and Olux-E foam is interesting as you are treating the alopecia both on a system level and at a local topical level; a two prong attack.

Are you applying the Olux-E Foam anywhere else other than your scalp in order to promote growth (e.g. your eyebrows) ?

Scott :)

Hi Scott,
Yes it's a brilliant approach. The Olux-e is an anti inflammatory and the Cyclosprine is an autoimmune suppressant so it's covering off both bases in two different ways.
I've only lost hair on my head so far so that's the only place I've applied the foam.

Hi Cheri

Thanks for info. Might I inquire what length your hair has currently got to ?

Is it growing back in your original colour ?

My concern with the Olux-E Foam is that it contains a strong steroid so it may lead to thinning of the skin with continued use.

I've had some eyebrows come back recently (woohoo!) but unfortunately the little buggers are pointing in the wrong direction.

Hi Scott,

I'll post before and after pictures on my profile you so can see it.  I'm in my 50's so my hair is coming in salt and pepper. :)  My original hair is still mostly brown so my new hair is a bit more grey.  It's patchy but my husband says as it thickens up it seems to be getting darker.

The prescribed use of the foam is 3 weeks on, 1 week off.  Maybe that helps with the thinning issue - not sure.

Sorry, but I had to laugh out loud about your eyebrow hairs.  I can't believe they've forgotten which way to grow!

Hi Cheri

A few pictures of your 'salt and pepper' look would be most appreciated :)

Thanks for explaining how you use the foam. As your hair gets longer does it become more difficult to get the foam into contact with your scalp ?

With regards to the eyebrows, I'll just have to gel style them into place .... if they ever get long enough :)

Hi Scott.  I posted pictures on my profile at 10 weeks and at 4 months.  You'll see how fast it's growing.  You'll have to send me a friend request to see them if you aren't already a friend.  I don't want everyone in the 'World' to see them so please respect my privacy with these.

I'm not having trouble getting the foam to my scalp 'cause my hair is pretty short still and dissolves into a liquid quite quickly as I'm rubbing it in.  Once my hair gets longer I'm hoping not to have to use the foam anymore so it shouldn't be an issue.
