Did any treatment "work" for you?
It's my understanding that there's no "cure" for alopecia, but I'm still interested in learning about the varying degrees of success alopecians have had with the various treatments that are offered. Therefore, if you have alopecia and have had any luck whatsoever with a treatment, please share your story here. Be sure to say whether your regrowth was temporary, permanent, partial, or full, and whether you experienced any pain or other negative side effects as result of the treatment.
PLEASE NOTE: I'm only interested in hearing from people who have actually struggled with alopecia and NOT the companies, organizations, and individuals offering treatments and cures.

I was diagnosed with Alopecia Areata in mid 2011, having just a quarter-sized bald spot. My doctor tried steroid creams (which are very difficult to put on and didn't work). I tried steroid injections(hurts really bad) these help but by the time we started them I had about 3/4 % hairloss. The hair did grow back in most spots, but didn't stay for very long. Then we tried immunosuppressants (had a lot of digestion issues, weight loss, and got sick often). This treatment worked then best, total treatment time for this is 6-9 months, I HAD a full head of hair!!!!! As soon as I stopped the med it all fell out. I have Alopecia Universalis, total hair loss now. I will not try another med, cream, etc. I do know that everyone responds differently and if I was you I would give it all a try!!!!! My daughter suffers from Alopecia and we used a treatment from Israel called "Hair up". It worked and she now has a full head of hair. The doctor will not sell to everyone so you have to email them and set-up a phone conference. We are so grateful for him and his product. We also gave her Biotin pills.

In short..........nothing. I use Alpecin shampoo for any potential dormant hair that needs some help, aprt from that, shae the head forgt about it and hope for the best

No. After having been diagnosed I had some bald spots. The shots to the scalp actually made it worse, and they were expensive, as you all know our government does not recognize Alopecia as an illness and health care does NOT cover these treatments; they consider this "vanity". I did the shots every sick weeks for about a year. Very expensive, very painful. I used rogaine before it was over the counter. Again very expensive. I stopped both when I saw I did not have enough money in my budget to keep it up, plus there were no positive effects. Alopecia worked gradually and claimed my hair in 2011. For me, its been a relief. No more worry that my spots might show and all that stress. I live bald. I hate wigs, they are uncomfortable. I've been told if I had the money to get a wig made it might be more comfortable. Not my cup of tea, so to speak. So, "No" the treatment did not work.

Good to read your story. I wouldnt try another treatment again also after so many years in my life with hair/not hair. It is interesting to read the state of Alopecia for the governement. In Germany they do see it as a desease and they give you money to buy a wig. On the other side Alopecia is not important enough to put investment in the research on Alopecia. Rather into cancer stuff, which I kind of understand since Alopecia is not easy to deal with but at least you dont die from.

When I had AA I used anthralin (spelling?) And a topical steroid. It worked but then other spots fell out. I had steroid injections and they also worked temporarily but then my hair continued to fall out. I tried oral steroids as well and once again they worked but only temporarily. Then I gave up and decided putting all those chemicals and steroids in my body was not worth having hair for a few months then losing it. Now my alopecia has progressed to AU and I no longer try any treatments.

Give organic onion juice a try along with 10 minutes of direct sunlight on the scalp. Its worth a try :) luck!

I am pregnant so I refuse to take any major medications. My doctors are okay with me applying a very mild steroid called desonide to my eyebrows. I lost my eyebrows in January 2013 (literally 1 eyebrow was left on one side and 4 on the other side). In February I lost all of the hair on my head and body, except for some strange yet fortunate reason, my upper eyelashes were not affected. I now have lots of light hairs on both eyebrows and about 1/3 of the way back with dark eyebrow hair. (Too many to count... yaaaay!) I've even had to pluck some strays to shape my brows! :)

Hi there,
I am off too see an Ayuervda Practitioner on Monday, who specialises in ancient Indian remedies and practises healthy well being. I have had a chat with her previous and they talk so much sense, we do far too much in our lives, in our society we are far too hectic and we need to be able to practise relaxation through meditation and have a healthy diet. She has also explained massaging the scalp with coconut oil, to encourage blood circulation. This should be done a few times a week before going to sleep and wash out in the morn. I'm open to anything that may help but do believe I am here, because of my life has been hectic etc. I know this will change me for the better and at the moment I feel good as I am dealing with in a positive way. I had very long thick hair the other day and had it cut shoulder length and already I feel better and less is falling out. We have to try everything but I understand hair isn't everything but if I can save it then I will try, if not bring on the Wig. Xxx

I had AU after a horrible food poisoning (post infectious IBS and post infectious alopecia). For some reason the dermatologist doesn't want to do anything for me because she said I hide it so well. I do, I'm good at make-up and wigs but I want my hair back. I've had AU for almost 3 years. For those of you who used diet modifications and onion juice how long was it before you saw anything? I have been grain-free, mainly paleo with lots of juicing for 2-3 weeks now. The magic number seems to be 6 weeks. I so wish my eyebrows and eyelashes would grow back at least!
