Yesterday, while sitting in church and "listening" to the sermon, I leaned over and whispered in Cheryl's ear.

"Hey, I just noticed something about you."

"What?" she responded.

"You don't have any hair!" I quietly exclaimed.

My wife started laughing and simply said, "Too late!"

On another occasion, the battery in my mobile phone died while we were talking on the speakerphone to our favorite cousin.

After I recharged the phone, our cousin called back and said, "What happened, bald head?"

Since I was sitting right next to Cheryl, she could hear our cousin and immediately asked, "Hey, who is she talking about!"

All three of us laughed.

And my wife and I laugh often, not just about her alopecia, but about just everything under the sun.

It's not a cure for alopecia, but it's still some of the best medicine either of us could ever take.

Do you and your partner ever joke about your alopecia? Why or why not? If so, please share a funny story with the rest of us. :-)

I think it's only ok to joke about it if it's all in good fun. The guy I'm with right now had originally made jokes about how I'd look like a dick with ears if I was bald, but that hurt my feelings a bit, since I was already concerned with looking unattractive with no hair. I explained my feelings to him and he hasn't made that joke again since he knows it hurt me.
Now, if he and I pass by a poster of Mr. Clean or some guy with a comb over, I'll occasionally say something like "Hey look, it's me!" just to show that I'm at the stage where I can laugh at it.
Generally, if it's jokes about how I'd look bad, I get offended. If it's a joke just to acknowledge its existance or something like that, I can laugh at it too.
Alexandra and Merryberry, I certainly agree with both of you. That's why I try to avoid getting my laughs at someone else's expense, especially my alopecic and adorable wife. In keeping with this, it's also a good idea to keep "inside" jokes inside, aye?

Jokes may not be the truth, but they always represent a true feeling.

Yes, Thea, and I truly feel that it's hilariously absurd to think that bald can't be beautiful. :-)

All the time!!!
I joke and say how "opposites attract" because if you look at my pictures, my boyfriend has all of the hair and I have none!!
The other day my boyfriend's mom was telling us how her pastor said that if you want good advice, you need to talk to someone that has gray hair - the more gray hair, the more experience they have – he turns to me and says “Well baby, no one’s going to be coming to you for advice!!”
You two look great together!
I can't agree with you two more, a sense of humor can see you through so much. My husband Vince & just celebrated our 30th Wedding Anniversary. Live, Love, Laugh.
Wonderful replies, thanks for sharing. Haha, I dont have a partner yet, so I'm not sure about it but it sure sounds fun for lots of you. I believe that all of us as alopecians have a similar set of humour about alopecia, anything more or less could be hurtful. Generally, a joke made private between two or several close friends and family are acceptable. If the jokes were made in huge group of people, I may not be too thrilled. Soon enough, people should be able to pick what kind of jokes are funny and acceptable.

The one that I had to pretend its funny...can't do much about that...If I'm willing to pretend that the person must be important in my life. That's all I have to say...out of the topic anyway...lol.

Thanks

My husband and I joke around alot. Hes had AA for over 10 andI just recently started lossing my hair. A day like yesterday he put on my head scarve and I was laughing so hard because this scarve is very girly so it was too funny. One day we were walking in mall and this was the first time I went out in public with a wig and thought all eyes were on me and that everyone new I was wearing a wig and he said I dare you to take the wig off ( He thinks I look great without it) .... I laughed so hard so he did get some of the anxiety out of me. But he is also sensitive and will not say something that would hurt my feelings.
I think that is the point, if he knew it something he said could possibly upset you, he wouldn't say it.
Sometimes you have to guess who has alopecia in our household ;)
Haha yes, my boyfriend and I joke about it all the time! Have you ever seen the movie "Minority Report"? There are characters in the movie called "pre-cogs" and they are bald and can see into the future. He calls me "pre-cog" once in awhile, and I think it is hilarious. We're also trying to figure out how I should use my bald head to my advantage for a Halloween costume!

If he joked all the time in a mean way, I would be upset, but he tells me all the time how beautiful I am, even when I'm not wearing my wig. My favorite is when we wake up in the morning, and I'm make-up-less, hairless, and eyebrow-less, and he looks me in the eyes and says I am the most beautiful thing in the whole world. But I agree that laughter is certainly the best medicine :D
