Hi there everyone! I haven't written in a while ~ I've been busy with work & being a Mommy. Does anyone feel that their possible exposure to Black Mold may have contributed to or caused AA? I noticed a black substance covering a large portion of the chalking in the shower the kids use. The cleaning lady tried to say we just needed new chalking (she cleaned for us the past four years ~ beginning one year prior to my daughter's first AA diagnosis). A few months ago, I let the cleaning lady go, and started cleaning my own bathrooms. I thought that the substance might be black mold. I poured bleech over those areas, and within moments, the black substance was gone! It was mold!! I'm hoping to gut that bathroom this winter, hang new sheetrock & start over with a completely free-of-mold bathroom. My house was built in the 1940s, so I believe the possiblity of a mold problem could exist in that bathroom ~ I haven't found any type of mold anywhere else in the house. Oh yeah, six months ago, my husband and I ripped the carpets out of the house and had the hardwood floors redone, as we had heard mold spores can grow in old carpets. Do you have any thoughts regarding black mold? I read on the internet that black mold can cause hairloss. Let me know what you think. Take care & have a super good day!

Hi there Sharon. Thanks for sharing your story. You are right about moving forward and not dwelling on AA as such a problem. My son is super outgoing ~ and my daughter is very shy. My family and I have a friend who is AU ~ no hair anywhere. He has his own business and my son shadowed the guy's job a few times now. My daughter also knows him well, and they know that their AA could be worse. The kids don't really chat about their AA. They are pretty much used to having it and so, I don't make a big deal of it either. It's a house cleaning day here, so I'd better get back to work. Thanks again for your input & take care!
Here's some info about sheetrocking bathrooms to avoid moisture and subsequently mold/mildew.

Bless your heart Karen!! My husband and I plan to begin remodeling our bathroom, after the beginning of 2010. Thank you soooooooo much :o)
when I first started losing my hair I searched the web for info or ideas why , I wondered about the mold I really think there is some connection between fungus/mold and aa.
Yep ~ I read the same thing. That exposure to black mold can cause AA. Also, a research scientist at the National Alopecia Areata Registry had never heard of siblings getting AA within the same month (like my kids). That research scientist also said that more and more factors are pointing to environmental issues causing AA. I just wish they could find the right direction at the registry ~ to find a cure ~ don't we all!!
I am currently thinking along the same lines as you. I developed AA Oct 08, had almost total regrowth in Feb 09 and now in the process of losing it again (I'm in NZ so it is currently winter - mould season). The funny thing is - my husband now has AA. No blood tie there, weird aye. We live in the same house and eat the same food so we are thinking it must be food or environment. We eat well - a good range of veges so are thinking it's probably not food. Keep us informed on how you get on with your wee ones.
Hi there Karen! I'm sorry to learn that you and your husband are experiencing A.A. When my daughter got it the first time, at age eight, my husband and I had to wonder if she was exposed to something in the sand at the beach. The beach hadn't been combed yet (just before summer), and the sand was darker than normal ~ but no hazardous warning signs were up at the public beach. Then, last summer both kids got A.A. within the same month. There are oil refineries within a one hour drive from home. Over the years, toxins were accidentially released in to the air (a few different times), and people who live in the same town were told to stay inside as much as possible for a few days, etc. I guess you never know what companies could be releasing into the air we breathe, nor how often companies appropriately report the release of toxins. We live in the San Francisco Bay Area, there are a lot of companies around. As a worried Mommy, I've done a lot of research over the last couple of years. Maybe try a few of these things: 1) Try using Lavendar scented shampoo and cream rinse ~ also consider using Lavendar air fresheners or burning Lavendar candles occassionally (Lavendar is supposed to have a claming effect on the body; 2) Conisder taking Sea Kelp tablets, as it is supposed to stimulate hair growth (my kids are too young for Sea Kelp tablets); 3) Massage each other's scalps nightly (that is also supposed to stimulate hair regrowth); 4) Make sure your are cleaning bathrooms at least once every two weeks with cleaning chemicals; 5) I really believe that 5% Minoxidil works - twice daily - but it can take up to four months to produce results; and 6) I believe the best treatment is the Kenalog injections every four weeks. My daughter is almost in complete remission; and my son's AA does not seem to be getting worse. Take care!
We have a Natural pharmacy near us. I took my son there for help with his AA. He is only 3, and doesn't really mind the bald spots, but I wanted to see if there was anything else going on that could be causing this. The pharmacist looked over his blood work, and then took a hair sample for analysis. It turns out that he had a high level of mold toxicity in his body, as well as the chemical from round up. We are on a vitamin regimen and also did a mold detox. His hair got worse in the fall, and now is getting better after the detox, supplements and chiropractic.

My 10 year old son lost his hair in May and I couldn't understand why this had started happening.  When he stays overnight at his dad's house he has a basement bedroom.  I asked my ex to test the room for mold and he discovered that there was black mold present!  He since moved out of that house.  I switched to a gluten free diet and his hair started coming back - but there are still some patches.  I'm wondering what else I can do to try and get his hair growing again.  I think the trauma to the system sparked this... any luck?

Hi!  Gosh - haven't visited this website in over a year & didn't realize I had a message from you, or would have responded sooner!  I'm glad your ex moved!  The good news here is that neither of my kids have had A.A. for some years & are both in College.  Also, way back around 2009, I met a wonderful lady on this site, whose son around 10 year-old had A.A., and his has since went away too!  I know the pain & anguish a parent can feel = What did I do to cause such stress?  Was it my genetics that caused this?  Why can't I find a way to make this go away? Etc.   Make sure that you and your ex inspect a few times a year, for black mold in bathrooms, behind furniture & around Windows & destroy black mold with a spray bottle of 50% bleach & 50% water combination.  Hopefully,, the A.A. is just an adolescent thing, will go away, & never return!

I find this really interesting. I moved to Seattle, Washington in 2012 from San Diego, CA. I lived in a loft style flat for about 8 months before we bought our house. I moved into our home in August, 2013. That is the exact month my hair started falling out. I was preganant at the time so it never occurred to me that the environment could be a factor. Fast forward to this past Tuesday when I met with a new ND; she wants to test me for mold allergies and if it comes up, I'm getting my house tested. I have tried everything under the sun as far as treatments go. The ONLY thing that brought me hair back (only on my head) was Xeljanz. I was on it for 16 months and was getting steroid injections at the same time. I got about 90% of my scalp hair back (no lashes or brows), but it would continuously shed. Seattle is very wet and cold so I wouldn't be surprised if there was a connection or trigger with my Alopecia. Side note: I stopped xeljanz in Dec and within 3 weeks all my hair fell out. I plan on starting back up in march.

Hi!  Sorry to know you are going through this hair loss problem & I've heard before of pregnancy alone causing hair loss problems.  I think it is important to get your residence tested for mold.  The GREAT news here is that both kids are in college & no sign of A.A. for some years now :-)  The carpets are gone & only light draperies.  I clean my own house & a few times a year inspect behind curtains & furniture for black mold and if found, spray it with 50% bleach & 50% water to destroy it.  I'm so happy for you, that you will get the experience of being a mother.  I hope the hair loss is temporary and that it stops ASAP!
