Hi all; I have androgenetic alopecia and was wondering if anyone could help me figure out the best way of disguising diffuse and patchy loss? I don't want to shave it all off yet, but the gap in my parting is getting more and more visible and I have big patches missing above my right ear. The patches can be hidden by using the hair I have left on top, but I can't tie my hair up and on windy days the loss is pretty obvious.

What are my options to give myself a fuller head of hair while I still can? Are extensions a bad idea in case of traction alopecia? Are there hairpieces that can sit on the side of your head as well as on top, without an all-over coverup?

My hair is blonde and quite curly, so I'd need to be able to match it as well as possible.

I'm based in Bristol, UK, so if anyone knows of any suppliers near there, I'd also be very grateful; I'd rather try things on and have a proper chat with someone for my first hairpiece, rather than buy online.

Thank you!!

Hi Natasha
A product called Nanogen is a UK product. I am not sure if you can go to a salon that carries wigs and they would have it there...usually they have those type of products. Another one is Toppik. It is keratin fibers that you sprinkle into your hair and they create the look of fullness and cover thinning spots as long as there is hair there for the fibers to attach to.

I would not recommend extensions as they will put too much strain on your bio hair. Since AGA is a process that makes hair fragile as it attacks the follicules, you really don't want to use hair replacement that stress the hair.

Yes there are hairpiecs that just cover the top of your hair. They are called toppers or top pieces on web sites. I have also heard of Falls. I think which one you use depends on where your hair loss is. These are US wig sites but you can see these pieces on their sites, voguewigs.com and wigs.com. I would suggest you join the wigsupport.com where I am sure there are other UK people on there that could suggest places for you try wigs before you buy. Of course a goog google search would also work.

Hi,
I uaw product called 'Couvre' which is kind of like a makeup, face paint type consistency and you put it on with a sponge. It's worked well on covering my patches for a good few years now. I currently have less than 50% of my hair and can still get away with just using the couvre and tying it back, though I am getting a wig soon. You get a shade darker than your natural colour - I have dark brown hair and use black couvre. I've also used a similar product called Maine but that was quite messy and more difficult to use as you spray it on.
Hope this helps.
