Dear Elise,
Please know that many many people wear wigs for many reasons. If there are any support phone people that you can talk to through NAAF, the national alopecia areata foundation, please do. I am a phone support person in indian wells, ca. Please call me if you want to talk. My daughter has AU and has a wonderful and happy life, both professionally and personally, I am so proud of her. She wears amazing Human Hair wigs and I can give you much advice as to what you need to be looking for in a wig. If a wig is natural feeling, light weight and fits well, you will learn to accept your alopecia. You have to be strong and know that this should not stop you in anyway shape or form. Believe me my daughter had amazing hair and I have shed many tears, but life must go on and it will for you, Reach out to me or a support group. You are not in this alone. All my best , Lisa

Alo-mom, can you please recommed human hair wigs.....my hair also has shed so much and even though it's a normal length, it is very, very thin and I am not sure what other options I have since I heard that extensions can be bad for your hair.
Hello, if your hair is thinning, as you suggest ,extensions are not for you. Sincerely in my mind extensions are just to extend hair, not to fill it in. I think for those with Alopecia, any form of it being sold that bill of goods is not good. You have two options, one is a topper which is placed on your head with clips that can be taken in and out every day. The type of topper I am talking about is one that has a scalp type look and is human hair. Please do not go with a synthetic because the shine will not go with the hair you have . This kind of topper would have to be placed on your head and cut to enhance the hair you have. The other option is a wig. I know going to this option is a hard leap. I am here to help you with that. I have studied wigs and can give you guidance on what you need to be looking for. At present for my daughter I design and specify the type of cap, hair, density, measurements etc for custom human hair wigs. If you could take a look at my story on how I went to china to find the best factory possible to supply my daughter with wigs you will understand my passion to help others. I know I have said this on Alopecia world many times, but I will say it again. I could not control the loss of my daughters hair, but I was going to control the type of wig she would wear. I would be glad to share pictures of wigs she wears and pictures of her so you may see how natural the hair line is. She has no hair so she wears a full cap. Again, I am here for you and I know this is a very hard time for you. As a mother the loss of my daughters hair was a show stopper until I took control of how I could help her. Please feel free to call me and email me so that I can help you in any way I can. All my best. Lisa

We so know how you feel...that self conscious feeling can over take your life. Most of us out here have a form of alopecia which is not just thin hair; it's NO HAIR. or not enough to look socially acceptable. Getting something that looks the most natural and feels secure will help you SOOOO much.
If you still have your eyebrows and eyelashes (most of us do not) PLAY THEM UP. Make your eyes your focus. In time you will get accustomed to a wig. If I were just starting out with buying a wig, I would call Alo-Mom. She's got a wonderful product at a really good price. I just got my first piece from her, and was over the moon happy with my tangle free hair. Acceptance happens over time... but a good wig helps speed up that process.
First time wearing a wig can be overwhelming.
It gets easier trust me.
During the years I have had some bad buys.
Feel free to message me if the wig isnt working out.
Wear the wig to a shopping centre where you normally dont go. Test it out.
Try wearing the wig in a low ponytail etc or other ways.
If you people seem to be looking at you in a strange way chances are its probably the wrong wig.
I have been wearing a wig for over a decade.
From my experience you should start off with an inexpensive lace front or mono top wig.
They are often the most natural.
If the wig still looks unnatural you can try wearing a headband with the wig which makes it less conspicuous.
comments:
-a messier look will always look less wig-like IMO
- consider seeing a therapist to get you through this transition. It is a tough time but without sounding corny, you will likely come through as a better, stronger, more empathic person
-when we think someone is looking at us in a weird way, chances are they are still way more worries about how they look
-I spent so many years hating myself for not having hair...such a waste...it saddens me to see others beating up on themselves here. If it is about wanting to be attractive to a mate/date, there are people out there who will love you with or without hair...it is really about how you feel about yourself. Sounds like BS I know but it really is true
-love and peace!
