If they sell human hair wigs, why can't we use our own hair? Does everyone just throw their hair in the garbage as they collect it all over the place? Everyday for the past year my hair has been falling out. I started having some new growth a couple of months ago on all the bald spots. I still have some of my original hair left which is still coming out everyday. I've never told anyone that I've been collecting my strands and putting them in a baggy, one reason is maybe I could have a wig made of my own hair and two is that it is hard for me to let go of it forever, like I have an attachment to it, it is part of me that I may never see again. Maybe I'm crazy, but I can't let go yet. I'm I?

I have a duffle bag full of hair but it has became so dry and damaged I wouldn't want to be reminded of it with a wig.Don't ask me why I've kept it. I guess I am can't let go either. If you have good, healthy hair I don't see why not. They do it all the time for Locks of Love and such.
Thank you for your reply Chefpam. I feel so much better to know there are others out there that can't let go. It never bothered me when I didn't have AA and I found hairs around and my brush was full of them. I just picked them up and cleaned my brush and in the garbage they went. Now every strand seems precious, it's almost like a death. For some reason it feels almost comforting and has become a routine and almost makes me feel that I haven't really lost anything, just removed to a different place. I feel if I ever go AT or AU that I will have a reminder of what my hair was like, I mean it WAS a part of me and I may never get to see or feel it again. WOW, sure feels good to get that of my chest! Now I can move on. Thank you again. God Bless us all.
Hi

You are able to use your own hair in a hairpiece. As long as the company you deal with uses human hair. There will be strict criteria around what is usable and unusable hair as well. If you want to understand how to do this just let me know and I will pass on the criteria I use when people want to donate or sell hair.

Rosy

PS - I don't think you are crazy at all and I think everyone here understands the want to keep your hair.

PSS - Another thing to understand is that one persons ponytail does not equate to one hairpiece.
Thank you for your reply Rosy. What a relief! This site is a blessing. I feel so much better knowing that I was losing my hair and not my mind. I would appreciate any info can can pass on. Thank you again.
i know what you mean when you say its hard to let go of it, i feel that way too, whenever my hair is falling out alot i look at every beautiful strand and its hard to just let it drop to the floor, i just want to go stick it back in XD i know that its something i have had and has been with me through everything for years and it was a little part of me and now its gone, kinda like losing a friend.
Thank you for your reply miss G. I'm feeling a lot better about saving my hair. I went from a sandwich size bag to a quart bag and I am working my way up to a gallon bag. Maybe I'll have it buried with me when my time comes. LOL Hey, I got to get my sense of humor to kick in again. I think that's the only thing that will save me, especially to be able to laugh at myself. (-:
I know where you are coming from. I have said the same thing and my epitaph would be: "hair today, gone tomorrow." At lease we still have a touch of humor...eventhough no one else is allowed to laugh at us. It is hard because it is a part of us...when you look in the mirror and apart of you is gone, it's tough......
Oh Chefpam, I LOVE it! (Hair today, gone tomorrow) Hope you don't mind if I use that. Hey, if I can make someone laugh (I hope with me and not at me), I've done a good deed. You know, it made me laugh, and that's a good thing.
:)....hugs to you.
I think in wig making it's important that all the hairs are going/lying in the same direction. Not sure how you could accomplish that with "collected" hair.
Either do I Janie-Ann. I don't know if the wig maker does that. Meanwhile, I'll just keep collecting it and saving it. I just can't bring myself to throw it away. It's become like a ritual everyday. In a weird way it almost feels like it's normal to do it. I've been collecting my hair for almost a year now. I feel like I want to have some memory of my hair if I should lose it all one day and never get it back. Right now I have some growth on the bald spots, but still other hair is falling out. As Chefpam says, "Hair today, gone tomorrow." I love that! (-:
After my first two bald spots appreared about 2 months ago I had 13" cut off my hair, and I just donated it, so this is all fresh on my mind. I donated my hair to Locks of Love..hair must be clean, and in a pony tail, or braid, but together. Yes, I am sure if you had a way to collect it in this manner, you could reuse it though. One mom has been collecting her hair for her daughter. The pony tails must be a min. of 10" long also. It takes many, many donations to make 1 wig though. Anyways there are also other organizations that you can check into I am sure. Good luck to you. I hope this helps answer your questions. Mailing off my hair was kinda weird after just being diagnosed with AA, but made the donation even more special to me.
I have been sorta the opposite ..I get so irritated at finding my hair everywhere..I just want it off the counters, off the floor, out of my brush, and out of the drains. I got tired of everyone complaining about my hair being all over them.
