Hello, My son is now 14 years old and he was diagnosed at age 5 with AA, this year has been the worst by far, he has lost so much hair and I worry about him everyday, he has great friends, but he is very shy and does not communicate well with his Dad and I. We have tried Prednisone, Cortizone shots, but the area is so big now, they want to try Immuno therapy, have any of you had success with this?

Thank you,

Cathy

My son is 15, and after almost a year AU, has significant re-growth. He has been on immunosuppressants during this time - although they aren't being prescribed for his hair loss. We found out he had Ulcerative Colitis and that has been the course of treatment since June '09. He was supposed to go off of the immunosuppressants this past summer and we were curious to see if the hair stayed. But he had a severe reaction to the new medication they were trying so we're back to square one and he'll be on them at least until next summer when we'll try again. I wish I knew if they were responsible for the re-growth, although I don't think I would have put him on them for just hair loss. We have to run to the doctor anytime he's exposed to anything. We had a scare with the swine flu, shingles and then chicken pox. Each time we had to put him on anti-virals just to be safe.
Hi Connie,

Thank you for responding, it is nice to talk to some one that has a son who is going through the same thing, Ryan does not communicate with me, so it makes it very hard, I don't know how he is feeling, he gets very quiet when I ask him if kids question his spots, I am going to speak to his school counselor this week and just let him know what is going on, Ryan does have some great friends that have know about his AA since he was 5 years old, we are going in next week to try the Immuno Therapy/ Squaric acid treatment, I am concerned. Hope Chris is doing well, I am sorry to hear about Ulcerative Colitis he has, amazing what life throws at us. Please take care.
