I'm 14 years old, I've had alopecia areata for about 6mnths now however my hair has been falling out for about a year and a half. I also have insomnia which ive had for 2 years, ive had loads of blood tests done and they just showed up to have very low iron levels which ive been given fersamal for now to boost, however the stress my body is under is causing me to feel faint and get pains in my heart more often than not nowdays, especially in the past week. But at the moment all i want is my hair back, becuase hair has always been my strongest point and the thing i liked most about my self, does anyone know of any tips or cures for me? I'd prefer not to be taking medicans if poss but anything at the moment is something ill consider now. PLEASE I REALLY JUST WANT MY HAIR AND CONFIDENCE BACK!
I've been wearing extentions for a few mnths now but people know about it anyway so they ask questions all the time, also you notcie they're fake becuase they're slightly lighter than my hair which is mainly because i cant afford better ones. PLEASE HELP ME!!!

Hi Gemma,

I am so glad you posted. I had to take a lot of courage to ask for help. Just so you know I am much older then you are and have alopecia universalis.....so no hair on my body. I can't imagine what its like being 14 and losing your hair.

So, the first thing is that its pretty normal to be stressed out out all of this. So I'm going to give you some information that I know and suggest some helpful hints. First off, there is no cure for alopecia areata. This is an autoimmune disease which means that your immune system is attacking your hair folicules. There is nothing you did to cause this. Its an unpreditable disease. Sometimes it comes back and sometimes you might lose it again. There are different treatments that have had really good succcess. I'm not sure where you live but I would ask your doctor to refer you to a dermatologist who specializes in hair loss. I also hope that you are talking with your parents and that they are supporting you. Please let your doctor know how much stress you are experiencing. He/she could suggest supports for you.

I do understand that your hair is important to you. During this time its also important to continue to do the things you enjoy doing....sports, friends, movies,,,,,family,

It takes a lot of confidence to go on this site and ask for help so you DO HAVE confidence. Please remember that there is soooo much more to you then your hair.

Keep posting and let us know how it goes,

Michelle

Have the doctors checked your thyroid levels?

First of all I know what you are going through I was diagnosed at the end of my senior year in high school five years ago, right before prom so I know how you are feeling. Take a deep breath and relax I have noticed that my alopecia areata gets worse when I stress out so stressing is not gonna do you any good trust me ( I know easier said then done but seriously if you de-stress yourself a little it really will help) as for the extensions I wore them the sew in ones and lace front sew in wigs for three years my advice is don't do it opt for a real looking wig instead the sew in stuff really does more damage than it does help. Trust me they have some amazing wigs these day. Just do things that relax you and I know this is hard but take you're attention off of hair for a while, Plus wearing a wig has some advantages you can have straight hair with out using a straightening iron and curly hair with out a curling iron, and you can have a good hair day every day while giving your natural hair time to heal. Just have a little fun with it thats what I do I wear a short bob one day and long flowy locks the other day..it has taken sometime but I have come to look at my alopecia as an excuse to play dress up every day I can change my look and style when ever I feel like it. Alopecia is a tough disease to live with but once I accepted it and let my self deal with it it became easier for me hang in there, I hope this helps.
