Help, I need to buy a wig for my daughter. She got her first one in Sept. from a friend in NY. We were very fortunate that he helped us when her hair loss became rapid and she was about to start school. However, it is not holding up very well. I heard we should stick with human hair because it looks the most natural and she won't have to worry about heat (i.e., opening the oven door, etc.). She is 16 years old, so this is difficult enough for her. The one she has is human hair, but it can't be very good quality because it is always getting tangled and seems to be thinning at the part. I want it to look as natural as possible so she can be comfortable and I want her to be able to part it wherever she wants, but she does not want a lace front. I have a catalog from Georgie, but I'm not sure where to start! What is the difference between red label european human hair, european hair and remy + human hair? What about the hair direction, the form has 2 choices - backward and forward? Then it asks, "machine wefted, closed net or hand made"? and material: white silk or monofilament? Ahhh! i used to think I was intelligent, but this is totally foreign to me. Can anyone offer some advice?

Hi Lisa,

Does your daughter have some hair? or none?

It can be very confusing and these labels are not consistent across vendors.

I think you want to find a mono-filament French top hand-tied. That means it can part in any direction.
There's human hair that's cheaply made( no care taken that the hairs are all going in the same direction with regard to cuticle) and then there's human hair with high standards of quality control. Prices are all over the place. Budget is a big consideration. The cap must also be comfortable or she won't want to wear it. Many women are perfectly happy with a $100 wig and while they feel pretty, side by side with a good quality human hair piece the cheap one pales by comparison. Styling and cap fit make a difference.

For a first wig, if you can, try for recommendations of places with exceptional customer service where no amount of cap adjustment is ever too much for them.

Talk to a lot of people here and at wigsupport.com and at heralopecia.com and ask about their wigs, especially the women in their 20's. Get their feedback. I am also available to give more input and share my experiences and what women tell me about their wigs.

Thanks for your imput Thea. My daughter has very little hair ( a small tuft on the crown which she wants to keep). The cap on the one she has now is very comfortable, it's the hair quality that is the problem. It was made for her by a friend of a family member in NYC who works with famous people. He did it as a favor to her to help her feel comfortable starting school and we are very grateful. However, because of his location and clientele his prices will definitely be way out of our budget. Thanks again for your help.
Well I can't offer you too much on all of the materials and everything because I usually end up having to look it up, but just a quick tip about the thinning at the part, try to make sure that you guys avoid brushing close to the part. It can damage the hair pretty quickly and makes it easier for the hair to come out with normal brushing. I had alopecia ever since I was 13 (now 18), so just let your daughter know it does get easier to deal with as time goes on (I've even started to feel comfortable enough to wear only a bandana to the barn I ride at). And don't worry too much if she gets in funk every now and again because for the most part I am okay with everything and she will be too but we all go through bad days where nothing seems fair. Finding a good wig is tough (I'm still looking for one that I really like), but don't get too discouraged. I don't know what your price range is but I have heard really good things about the freedom vacuum wigs and I am actually considering getting one myself so its something to look into because the quality is supposed to be really good.
Thanks Dielle, for the tips and kind words. I know she'll be okay, I just want to help her as much as I can. I don't think the freedom vacuum wig is for her at this point because she does have a small patch of hair left that she does not want to shave. Also, because the wig thing is new to her, I want to be more comfortable with the whole thing and have a little time to decide on a style.
If I was you I would look up your local wig shops because that way you can get a better feel for what she might like and whether you want to take her with you the first time or go solo is totally up to you. Just be careful though when buying a wig from a shop because most stores have a policy that as soon as you take it out the door it can't be returned. So even if your daughter thinks she has found one she really likes take her back a few times to look at the one she likes and others. Online is a good option in case you get the wig and don't like it but it is a lot harder to match color and really know what it looks like so I realllly recommend going to an actual shop even if it is just to look. (that way you can see what the colors of all the major manufacturers look like so you can get it cheaper online in the right color)
Thanks Dielle. I think we found one! We went to a local private salon and the woman spent time with my daughter talking about what she wanted then she called us when she had 5 different pieces in and my daughter tried them on. You're absolutely right, it was great for her to be able to try on different lingths and styles. She's thinking about it over the weekend, but she is really pleased with what she saw. Hopefully it will work out.
