I'm 14 now and I was diagnosed with alopecia last year.  I now have no hair on my head, but I still have eyelashes and eyebrows and everything else.  Ok so track starts in about a month, and I REALLY wanna do it!  I don't wanna miss out on anything at school:(  All of my friends are doing it and I don't wanna be the only one that's not!  So how can I do it with a wig?  I'm using a "classic cap" wig right now, and I can't even change without worrying that it will fall off (cuz it does fall off when I change with it on).  And I can't wear a different wig than the one I'm using right now, because people think it's my real hair!  So I can't use a vacuum wig or anything.  Is there any way that I can do track with a "classic cap" wig??? Can I use wig tape on those kinds of wigs?  And if I can, I would still have to change my clothes and stuff and my wig might get messed up if I change!!!  Should I just not do it?  Alopecia is so mean!!!

Hi, Sweetie! I have had alopecia areota since I was 10, and I'm 54 now, so yup; had to navigate the WONDERFUL landmine that is adolescence and high school in a classic cap wig because that was the only thing they sold back in the day. I did have some hair so I could secure the wig with hidden bobby pins. What I did for everyday wear was pull the adjustable straps as tight as I could and tie them into a knot, then put the little hook parts into those slots that they had. In terms of changing, I would hide behind my door locker and take my top off as quick as possible. What I did was pull my arms out of my sleeves first so that they would be inside my shirt next to my body, then I could grab the collar and pull the shirt straight up and then take it off. This way, you can discreetly hold on to the top of your wig so it won't move and take your shirt off. You can practice until you feel comfortable.

The classic cap wig doesn't have any place to apply tape, but you can get lace front wigs that are a mix of the classic cap in the back, but lace in the front, and you put the tape on the lace front and secure it that way. Look at RPG Show lace front wigs. They also have synthetic lace front wigs as well. Don't give up track and sports because of alopecia! I wasn't into sports, but I did have gym and I did theater which meant changing in front of other people with a classic cap wig. I told nobody I wore a wig, so I got very skilled at hiding. You can do it! HTH!

Have you checked out Freedom Wigs?  I have been active my whole life and love to swim.  I can do both in my Freedom wig.
