I have about 80% hair loss on my scalp and Im shaving off the rest but should I be shampooing and conditioning as normal, or just washing my head with normal soap?

At present I use Aqueous soap on the rest of me, but that isnt any good for hair, so what do you do to look after your scalp?

Hi Patricia. I was diagnosed with Androgenetic Alopecia at the end of last year. My scalp itches constantly, and the hair comes out when I scratch my scalp. When I went to get my wig, I went to the cancer center at a hospital here in Atlanta. The lady who talked to me suggested that I use baby wash on my scalp instead of the regular shampoo. I got some of the Johnson's Baby Wash, and it seems to help, but I have a lot of skin problems and I am getting somewhat scaly patches on the scalp now. I have an appointment with the dermatologist soon, but they gave me a steroid liquid to rub on the scalp when I was first diagnosed. It didn't really help much.
Thanks I'll have a try of the Johnsons Baby Wash.

Iv just seen a You Tube video by Youtips4u, she does a question and answer thing about scalp problems, you might want to take a look see.

I used to have cradle cap as a teenager, so I understand how you feel. I used an aromatherapy mix with an oil base to rub in the hair, which I then left on for about 10 minutes. You then apply shampoo first, before getting it wet then wash out as normal. Its something the hairdresser (when I had hair) suggested to me.

Since loosing my hair I havent had much of a problem.
Hi Deb,

I use Earthscience fragrance free shampoo on my scalp everyday. It's extra gentle with jojoba oil to moisturize the scalp. Some of those baby shampoos have a lot of perfumes in them, which can irritate the scalp more, I've found.
Patricia, I have had all forms of alopecia and at present I agree with Debbie on the baby wash deal. The scalp seems to get very oily or very dry depending on the time of year and head covering habits. I do not have eyebrows or eyelashes, so this is perfect from the "no tears" aspect and removes makeup without irritating too. Debbie, have you tried just plain ol hydrocortisone? I have excema/sebhoriac dermatitis/psoriasis (sp?) lol and I have patches of extreme dryness and scaling from time to time in various places and the hydrocortisone has always helped and is least expensive. I have noticed over the years that the AA has caused me to have pretty sensitive skin, and takes a little more to moisturize and/or cleanse as a result. Certain makeups irritate my face and eyes as well. Another thing I found for gentle cleansing is unscented (my preferance) baby wipes, always refreshing, quick, inexpensive and non irritating.
Hope this helps, Blessings to you!!

Lori, thanks! I also have seborrheic dermatitis, rosacea, eczema. Sometimes I feel like God made me from the leftovers no one else wanted! :-) LOL! My dermatologist gave me a prescription wash for the rosacea, some Metrocream, and an antibiotic. He also suggested that I use Neutrogena Healthy Defense Daily Moisturizer with spf as my moisturizer. That is the best moisturizer I have found, it isn't a bit greasy and doesn't cause me to break out. I have been using Bare Minerals makeup for several years now, and it doesn't make me break out, and it covers the Rosacea. I am going to try the baby wipes thing, those sound like a good idea! Thanks a lot for all of the good suggestions! Blessings to you, too!
Debbie
