As the title suggests, I am thinking about buying my first wig but I don't really know how. Should I order one online? I don't know of any wig stores in my area. They also seem pretty pricey. I can't see myself spending a few hundred dollars on something I'm not sure if I'll even like. I just miss my hair so much I thought if I did like wigs then over time I could get a small collection and be able to have different colors and styles of hair each day. (I loved dying my hair, which is probably what I miss most...besides, ya know, its presence at all). Why oh why are they so spendy! Grrr...I feel like we should be entitled to one free wig at time of diagnosis haha. I already have a couple of cosplay wigs that I don't wear only because they don't stay on...can you use wig tape with any kind of wig? Can you refit them at home?
Anyway, does anyone know of a place to buy good quality wigs in the $150 range? (Or lower). Also, how long do wigs last and do they give you a trial period in case you are not a fan? I'm not talking about if I don't get into the habit of wearing one, I'm saying if I get one and it hurts my head (I have really sensitive skin to the point that I can't wear any of my hats that have seams because they rub and irritate) or fits wrong.
How did you get your first wig if you are a wig wearer? Sorry if I sound clueless...I am!

I prefer buying in person to online. I live in New Orleans and wig stores are on every corner. Yeah! I never spend more than $40 on one. I am hard on my wigs so I just buy a new one every three weeks or so.
Many years ago, my first wig was very expensive from a boutique and I ended up looking like Elvira. I cried all the way home. I have had a human hair wig that cost a couple thousand as well. I am much happier, and get just as many compliments, with my cheap wigs.
I have had good luck online with a seller on ebay and another site. All for under $40.
@Mindy, sounds like a good place to get a bunch of fun wigs! Not counting the Elvira one...I'm sorry you had that experience. I bought a couple of costly wigs, one bright purple and one mermaid-isn one in lavender, teal and gray (unusual I know but it actually is pretty cool). I am trying some wig tape with them but it's been so hot here lately I can't stand to wear anything but sunscreen!
@VanillaPlum01, do you wear them everyday for 4 months? I know I won't be wearing avery day, or even every other day, more like 1-3 times a week at most. I really just want to have one or two in case I need them, much like you might have a fancy dress or suit in the back of your closet.
Hi Pippinsgirl:
If you're going for a new wig, it's always better to be able to see it on you, which means walking into a store.
For me, it's all about the fit. I've bought 2500.00 wigs and 3/4 wigs for $150.00.
The $2500.00 wig was a horror show. I should have just thrown it away.
I buy my 3/4 wigs from either Voguewigs.com or Wigs.com. They're wonderful.
Remember, at most online places if you take it out of the box to try it on, they will not take it back. So you must be very careful. I'm happy I can still wear a 3/4 wig, however, the sides of my head are getting skimpier and skimpier.
One thing I've done is that I can't stand the heaviness of the wigs and I thin it out with a special scissors (See if your hairstylist will help you with this.)
Wishing you all the best. I know it's not easy.
