Today,I was just diagnosised with hypothyroidism. I wonder when I'm leveled out will my hair regrow. My bald spot were growing in prior to being diagnosised. The medication synthroid can cause hair lost for the first few months. I've been not been feeling well, since last year. It's a blessing to be able to know I will feel better sooner or later. Any body have any stories or information to share?

Hey Susan did you get your thyroid retested?
No I didn't, but I will. Thanks for reminding me.
Funny you should ask, I was diagnosed with alopecia areata totalis in 2006, in 2008 i was diagnosed with hypothyroidism(hoshimotos desease to be exact) and (sibo small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) basically its like getting food poisoning ounce a week or so. Now this is my personal story and should in no way be tied into your situation as we are different. To make a long story short the major stomach problems turned out to be a extreme intolerance to lactose which was discoverd by me not the doc and about the thyroidism i started taking levo thyroxine about 50ng and after about a month or 2 experienced some sort of panic attack or some kind of attack of some kind Iwent to the emergy room they said everythings ok tsh levels a little low try a little higher dose of levo attack occured againthis time they wanted me on anti depressant and 200 to 250 ng of levo i said hell i cant stand 50ng i insisted on seeing a specialist for thyroidism my primary said no because ,basically according to the rules and tests my tsh levels dont warrant seing specialist yet i kept insisting and finally got to a specialist the specialist concluded thet i was border line hypothyroid and that at this time i didnt even need any synthroid or levo and that the 200 recommended at one point was too much , my point is get a second opinion even third opinion not from a primary care doc but from a specialist in that field do plenty of study and research so you understand whats going on or the doctors will walk over you make a mistake and never even apologize for it at least thats what happened with me. currently i personally am not on any meds but thats just me and my choice. hope in some way that helps get another opinion.
Thank you George for sharing your story with me. I will be calling the specialist tomorrow for an appointment. I just put it on my things to do list. I called the dr yesterday and he said I did not need to see the specialist, but I knew I was going anyway. Your right the specialist do lots of studies and research. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again.
I wish I knew the answer. I had an overactive thyroid at 7 years old and the following year my alopecia started and has continued since. At 14 years old I had a thyroidectomy and have been on thyroxine since and will be for life. I have always wondered about the links with hair loss. I am confused as I thought if I was "treated" and so within normal levels then this shouldn't be an issue. I also have discovered a hereditory link in the last few months. Sometimes, the cause isn't as important as the cure and that is something I sure don't have.... I really hope things stablize for you with the medication and that your hair regrows.... If not there are good supportive people here and I only wish I had found this site earlier in life!
Hi Lorna,

I did read that theatin an under or over active thyroids does mean regrowth of the scalp hair, when it comes to alopecia areata. I have about seven samll spots on my scalp that been there for almost a yr. The are filling in, but started prior to medication six days ago. My hair became very thin in some areas, which seems to be getting a little thicker. As I said before I've been feeling like crap for so long, that feeling better have became my main focus. I have so many symptoms that it takes my focus off my hair. Thank Lorna you for stopping to offer your support.
I wanted to make a comment on this, I know this is an old thread, but, I too have AA, and Hypo, both diagnosed at the same time... but what I wanted to comment on was Synthroid/levo. A lot of people often say they feel worse after using Syn/levo, despite the blood work shows the thyroid in normal range. I was on this for about 4 years, and I learned of Armoroid or Armorthyroid. Its a non synthetic hormone, after taking it, I felt better and my tests including the t4 and t5 were even better then when on the syntheic's... Problem is most doctors will not even discuss this with you... Big Pharma has done a lot of to crush the makers of Armoroid. My doc's RNP actually got very rude and aggressive with me when I suggested switching, though I demanded the change, and told my doc I would not see his RNP again, a year later he is actually amazed at how much better my numbers are... however, no effects on the AA, either negative or positive...
@ Xander My doctor took me off all medication. Right now I feel fine and my numbers are good. My hair is growing in. I now have a small close cute with some natural curls. I'm going to leave it cut short. It's hard to call it with AA, one just have to keep the faith.
