I live in Northern California and am starting to look for a custom wig. Any helpful suggetions out there?

I am starting to look into investing in a custom lace cap/net cap (not silicone) wig. I have seen the Peggy Knight beautiful European hair wigs but they cost over $3000.00 I was hoping to be able to get something for closer to half that price if possible. I have read about Cyberhair wigs but don't have any recommendations for those either. What I would love to know is if anyone out there that has some helpful recommendations on where to look in the Northern California region.

Any and all personal experiences would be appreciated. I have Alopecia Universalis and want to find a more comfortable and natural looking hairpiece that I could wear most of the time. The synthecic wig that I purchased for my chemotherapy is too uncomfortable to wear as often as I would want to wear it and now that it looks like I may never get my hair back, I need to invest in something better.

I never realized how expensive a good human hair wig would be and you can't get recommendations  for wigs the way you can on a car or major appliance. Since this is going to be a very major investment I was hoping that I could utilize the knowledge base of my fellow Alopecians.

Please, if you have any advise, I would appreciate it before I make this major investment.

Hi Judy,

I've had alopecia for about 13 years now. I've ordered many wigs/hairpieces from Charle Dewitt during the past 13 years. I've always been pleased with the wigs that I received and Charle's expertise. The wigs range in price from $1,800- $3,800. She has two hair studio's where she meets with clients. One is located in San Rafael, CA and the other is located in San Diego, CA. She usually spends one week of every month in Northern California to meet with her clients in this area. The rest of her time is spent at her other studio in Southern California. I would be happy to answer any questions you might have. You can also check out her products and get more info online at www.charle.com. Good luck!

Katie, Thank you so much for your reply! The wigs on the web site look beautiful! I will have to find out when she will be in San Raphael again. Have you found that you can comfortably wear the 'breathable custom hairpiece' for up to 10 hours without feeling like you have a girdle on your head?
I would love to feel that I could wear my wig all day without having to take it off to be comfortable.
Do you have Alopecia Universalis as I do? If so have you found a good solution to eyebrows? I can make my eyes look reasonably normal with eyeliner but the brows are more of a challenge.
Does it get easier to accept as time goes on? Has your hair ever started growing back in? I guess I just want to know why this is happening and what to expect. Sorry if I'm asking too many questions. I mostly want to know if I can expect to find a comfortable wig out there or if I'll just be spending money on a more natural look that is still uncomfortable. Again, thank you for your time and much appreciated information in responding. Judy
Hi Judy, you can buy 100% European hair wig way cheaper directly from manufacturer. Read this site, they have a lot of info their. I own one of their units and it is fabulous. www.russianhair.net
Carla, How do they size it? From what I can see it looks like there's no place to choose a size. They look beautiful though! I just want to make sure it fits my head. Thanks for the the help. Judy
Hi Judy, they give instructions. Look above the wig pictures. They used to have standard sizes but it looks like they are more flexible now and take custom size orders.
I'm planning on getting a hair system bonded on that becomes like a part of you. You just need to go in once a month or so for maintenance. It is not that much more expensive than a good quality wig; but be sure to check several places in your area to compare prices and quality. Ask for references and to see clients they have worked on. And don't be afraid to bargain them down. One thing I've learned from working in sales is: Everything is Negotiable! And this is no exception.

I've been busy doing a lot of research lately, it's a lot of work, but I want to make sure that when I finally make that commitment it is with the right place. If I go through with it, I'll be sure to let you all know how it works out. I've just had some awful experiences wasting tons of money on unwearable "high quality" wigs. I think feeling "whole" again by having something attached to me would improve my quality of life exponentially. Unless it looks like a dead skunk and fits like a corset I think I'll be better off than I am now.
Dominique,

Where do you get a hair system that is bonded? Is that like a lace wig?

Judy,

Do you have a wig from Peggy Knight? I just got mine and I agree they are beautiful, but It would be nice to find one for a little less money..

Look up "Hair integration systems" in your area They should offer a free consultation, I found a good place on LI that makes a custom mold of your head, and then bonds hair attached to a thin layer of material that fits like a second skin. This can function more or less as your own hair, and never comes off except for monthly visits for cleaning and maintenance. Even if you have no hair at all this is an option for you, also check out virtual reality hair. I just got a mold of my head done today and in eight weeks will be furnished with high quality russian hair attached to a system that was made just for me!
Awesome thank you
