Well I am a father of three beautiful healthy perfect girls now aged 9, 7 and 6 and my youngest had an episode of what our Doctor said was Alopecia over two years ago.
Part of me knows it was Alopecia however another part of me thinks and hopes it was something else..I will try to explain without making my wife sound like a bad mum..he he
Like most parents with young kids in school we had trouble with the girls getting knits. My wife was crazy about it and hated them(as most do I guess). She tried everything to get rid of them yet the kids would get them at random times etc etc.
So one day my wife is treating our chickens with a chemical pesticide for the sand fleas(small fleas that get attached to chickens and cause problems) and she decided to apply some of this to youngest girls hair. She told me after it was done and I was not happy. She diluted it well below what the recommendation was for the chickens and applies it to my youngest daughters hair. She washed it off an hour later and with no complaints from youngest(was turning 4 then). About a week later my daughter had a chest infection so wife took her to Doctor and was prescibed Amoxycilan. She was on Abx for almost 4 days and going through worst of it when we noticed the hair falling out. I googled the pesticide and found nothing on MSDS re hair (or feather) loss..wish I could remember the name now..its written down at home..will find it if needed
Her hair continued to fall out on both sides of her head until she was almost bald with a thinned mohawk. She lost almost all of it within a couple of weeks and then it started to grow back after about another 3 weeks after she lost it all.
We were told by pediatrician it was Alopecia. I dont know if it was or is going to happen again and we certainly haven't had anymore episodes. Youngest Daughter has always been the petite one of the three and if someone was going to get sick it was her. She is stronger now physically and she is fit and healthy like all kids her age. I have certainly made an effort to ensure she gets lots of red meat, vegetables etc and we are healthy family(not that it matters however dont want you thinking we are Maccas junkies..) we have 5 acres and kids are very fit and active.
She has had occasional cold and flu since with no hair loss at all. Hair is healthy and she actually has fine hairs on her back and arms. I did notice that she now has rough skin on her upper legs and upper arms that appears like folliculitis(not a good indicator I spose?? it is very very mild in that she doesnt have the smooth skin of my other daughters) She has definately become stronger looking as she has grown. She was always a pale child and now seems as vibrant as my other daughters.
Part of me hopes it was the chicken dip( yes I tease the wife all the time) that caused it or at least exacerbated hair loss in combination with Abx. I don't know and fingers crossed it never happens again.
I think Doctor is correct and that it was Alopecia and chicken dip had nothing to do with it however I pray that he is wrong and she continues to grow without another bout
Anyways I am just happy she is healthy, Id rather a bald kid than a physically sick kid however obviously id rather 100% healthy.
Anyways, I am rambling..what do you think? Confirmed Alopecia?
photo attached was taken last week..she is lil one in middle. Another of us in 2008 when she had it happen. This is as bad as it got..
