Hi everyone ...with wigs being expensive and all does insurance cover the cost of a wig? A good quality one at that? Today was the first day I revealed my new very short pixie cut. I'm already getting the whispers the looks and I'm not so sure how to take it? I was at the gym this morning. The one woman that I haven't really talked to in a few months (even though I see her every morning) came over to me to complement my new hair do. I have to wonder was she truly being sincere or am I just paranoid? I don't want to care what other people think! but I want to know what is going through thier minds.

Very few insurance companies will cover 'cranial prosthesis' aka wigs but according to my CPA they are tax deductible if your doctor diagnosis AA.

Hi Linda

It is dependent on which country you live in. The UK are often able to get some wigs (not all) through the NHS. Australian's are able to get some help from their Govt., but I believe it is fairly minimal. New Zealand there is a subsidy system (again fairly minimal). Parts of Europe especially Scandinavia have a better system to help those dealing with medical hairloss. Canada and USA have no real help for hairloss.

I personally wish there was a concerted effort from those that need hairpieces to work together globally to get Govt. to take note. But with this there is a problem as many with alopecia prefer to stay out of the limelight.

There are charities around that will help but they are often means tested.

Linda, you can't control what others are thinking so do your best not to go there. Work on making you feel good about your new look and the rest will fall in to place.

Hey Linda. I got a prescription from my daughter's dr for a cranial prosthesis and sent it in to my insurance co. (CIGNA) and they paid me for half of it. It's worth trying. You will need a prescription though.
