I recently started 15 mg of liquid iron (ferric pyprphosphate) since my Ferritin level was 33 and I have frontal hair loss (scarring alopecia, probably autoimmune...Derm Dr. gave me the Clobetasol Propriante and I've been using Rogaine for about 3 years. Still hair line is creeping back.
After 2 months of taking iron (I don't eat much red meat; lots of veggies, etc), my Ferritin level went DOWN to 26 (range is 16-288) and I wanted to get it to 50.
My other labs:
Saturation % - 17% (range 16-45%)
Iron Binding (TIBC) 338 (range 250-450)
Total Iron was 121 prior to Iron supplementation,
now 57 (range 45-160)
My primary care dr. doesn't think I need iron supplementation. (I just told her I was on 15 mg of iron from an acupuncturist/functional dr)
Am I wrong saying my iron levels are low? Other than my TIBC, am I nuts? I'd like to take more iron. My PCP wants to me to do invasive procedures like colonoscopy/endoscopy though I have no digestive issues at all . I don't have any big signs of anemia, but would like to catch this before something like that happens. Ruling out internal bleeding (I'll try to get a fecal stool test from her), how much more iron can I take that would be safe?
I can't get answers from any drs...no one wants to deal with this. (why we must turn to support groups and extensive research) I'm going to get blood tested again in about 6-8 weeks. I stopped taking the iron supplement 2 days prior to fasting blood work. Any help/feedback/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
My ferritin level was 5. To increase it, I was taking 4 iron pills per day each 60mg. Plus vitamin C. I was able to increase ferritin to 60 over 4 months.
I reduced my iron i take to 2 pills/day and ferritin dropped to 30.
I just want to say that 15mg of liquid iron is not enough.
Good luck!
