Tofacitnib and Ruxolitinib are believed to help alopecia areata because they are JAK3 Kinase inhibitors. But, Quercetin, Curcumin, EGCG have shown strong kinase inhibiting attributes.  And, JAK3 is one of them. There are newer forms (Quercetin Phytosome, Cucurmin Phytosome) which are more readily absorbed than other forms. Has anyone tried these orally or topically and seen any benefit? EGCG is readily absorbed, but, Quercetin and Curcumin are not easily absorbed.  The newer forms might change that issue.  After a biopsy determined I had a variant form of alopecia areata (more patchy diffuse form), I tried topical Green Tea / 40% EGCG formulation, and had a very good response.  Unfortunately, I increased the dosage and developed an allergic response and had to stop using. I lost most of the gains.  I am currently re-attempting and so far there is no allergic reaction at 1% in EtOH dose.  I am going to add Quercetin / Curcumin topically and orally to see if I can get the same results as 2 years ago.

Fantastic, thanks for the update. Sounds promising.

Perhaps I've missed this in one of your other posts in a different topic, but what percentage of scalp hair loss would you say that you have? Also, how long have you been affected?

Thanks!

I was diagnosed (biopsy) with a variant of AA.  Diffuse form of AA.  All over frontal region.  Very diffuse. I have been dealing with this for about 8 - 10 years.  Initially, because I'm male this was attributed to mpb.  Until, I had transplants done, and they too were not growing in. Then a biopsy was done and the result was a diagnosis of AA. I will keep you updated. So far things are looking good, but, I am one person, so it is only testimonial at this point.

Very valuablw post thank you!

Thanks Patchy.  My hair continues to grow in all over the frontal region.  Thicker than 6 months ago, and still getting thicker as time goes by.  If I stop using the topicals for a couple of weeks, the hair loss will start up again.  I've tried challenging this a number of times.  I've had to stop using the topicals on a couple of occasions because of folliculitis. The hairloss resumes within a couple of weeks.  So, I have to be careful to use just enough to stimulate the hair, but, not anymore to trigger folliculitis.  I think I've got the correct balance (for me) now, so, I will be able to use the solutions continuously to sustain the growth. Fortunately, I haven't lost any significant growth since the hair started growing back initially when I began using the topical solution. Each person is unique, so I think finding the individual balance is critical.

Hello brianboy,
Thank you for valuable information. I searched for the topical greentea/40% egcg could not find anything. Can you please provide link or guide us on how to find the topical and the supplements?

The NOW brand EGCG is 400 mg per cap - 200 of which is EGCG.  You then mix the powder into a solution to use topically.

Thank you again. Does also taking it orally help from your experience?

It couldn't hurt, but, I don't think it directly would help hair growth.

Hi Brainboy,

Greetings from Holland! My name is Remco and by the looks of it I have been diagnosed with the same type of AA as yourself a long time ago now. I'll turn 50 next year and I started showing AA symptoms somewhere around being 20 yrs old.

As you did I learned about the Curcumin inhibiting properties some years ago now and I started to experiment with the wonder root. I produce a paste from the fresh Curcuma root blending it with an even amount of quality olive oil and a reasonable amount of grounded black pepper. The olive oil will absorb the curcumin making it accessible for inner body absorption. The peperine in the black pepper will prevent the curcumin leaving our body before being digested by our efficient bodyworks. I try to take two teaspoons a day mixing it up in a cup of soup of houmous for instance.

The result is not the solution to AA but I suppose that by now you found out by yourself that for now, this will stay an impossibility. What is done for me is that it kind of slowed down the the AA that funny enough returns yearly to me, always right in front of the summer where we love to share our looks.:( The process is much kinder to me however because hair growth returns almost immediately where before the curcumin it stayed away for at least two months before slowly returning. Hairfall also seems to have slowed down dramatically where eventually the bold patches will reach the size that I'm used to, they hardly show because hair growth is now already present on the place where the patch started forming by the time it reaches its endpoint.

I'd say give it a try, I mean what can you loose? Its not expenseve and brings a ton of other interesting health benefits along. Good luck to you, I wish you lots of hair!

Remco Elisha
