Anyone had LASIK surgery and had complications with it? I really want to have it done but the dr. is afraid to do it because of the auto immune I have (Alopecia Areata). Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, No I have not had Lasik, but I have recently (one year ago) developed Severe dry eye, I'm learning so much about it now, and have joined a wonderful support site called Dry eye Zone, please check it out. I was amazed at how often this happens with Lasiks, I was actually considering having this done, to ditch the glasses, and now am so glad I did not. anyone with even slight dry eye is not a canidate for the proceedure, and the sad thing is not every center that is doing Lasiks is taking the time to really look at these pt before they have it done. Knowing what I know now, and how difficult it is to manage and live with this life altering condition, I would get myself as much education before hand as poss. good luck to you, and, I don't mean to be such a downer, I know a lot of people who have had successful Lasik, my son included, but having Dry eyes is so awful, I don't know that I would personally risk it before checking it out completely.

Hi, how was your Alopecia + LASIK journey?

Hopefully it was ok!

I have Alopecia Areata too, but I don't know if its possible to do LASIK. The eye doctor told me that it is possible as long as my autoimmune disease is under control, and I'm not under any medication.

But as you know, Alopecia is unpredictable and we do not know whether it is controlled or not.

Hence, I'm still pondering as to whether I should go on with the surgery.... I do not currently have dry eyes, although when I wear contacts for >12 hours, my eyes would be quite dry (i think thats normal).

I would deeply appreciate any advises, thanks alot!!

Perhaps you can stop wearing contacts for a few days to see how it goes? I wear contacts for nearly 12 hours from Mon-Fri. Most of the time, halfway through the day, I'll have to use eye drops as well. But my eyes become much less irritated when I switch back to specs at night/during the weekends.
I had 1 DR. refuse to perform it because of my AA but another did it for me. I do not at all regret doing it. It's the best thing I've done for myself . Waking up with clear vision every morning is a blessing! The dryness was a problem for about a month or two but I just kept using the drops and eventually it stopped. I have only had a couple of days since then that my eyes were dry. If you don't have a dry eye issue now, I would say it is ok to do it but if you're already having this issue maybe not a good idea.

May I know why did the first doctor decided not to do it? Was it due to probable complications that might arise when the cornea is healing?

Also, may I know what kind of LASIK did you chose to do in the end? LASIK, LASEK or EPI-LASIK?

Thanks alot!
