Hiya Everyone! I have really bad pitting on most of my nails, to the point that they just crumble and split. Some even have lifted off the nail bed. Has anyone else suffered from this with their alopecia and if so have you found something that helps them? Any help will be appreciated. Love K x

Hi Kirsteen,

To be honest, I'm quite sure my nails have pitted as long as I've had alopecia (which is going on 27 years now.) However, growing up I never paid any attention to it until I stopped biting my nails (which was when I was a senior in high school.) About that time though, my grandmother taught me how to do my own acrylic nails, which I have basically been wearing ever since. My nails have always been paper thin too. I KNOW that is directly a result of the alopecia, because everyone else in my family have long, thick, beautiful natural nails.

My solution to this particular issue is simple: As long as you're not allergic to any of the materials, get some gel nails or silk wrap nails or acrylic nails and call it a day! That way, you can have nails as long, thick, and pretty as you can tolerate -- and get yourself pampered in the process!

I hope that helps you!!
Hiya Kastababy! Thanks for getting back to me! If all else fails, may just get acrylics, if they look ok- you feel ok (what you dont see - doesnt hurt you ha ha ha!). Hope you're keeping well? Love K x
I have had the nail pitting (rows of tiny pits) since my AA first appeared in 2002. I also have developed a flattening of the nails on my two index fingers. Fortunately, it hasn't caused any problems....sorry to hear you're having such a hard time with it. Do you have a dermatologist you can ask about what you can do for the problems?

Mary
Hiya! No, I've never ever seen a dermatologist but have spoken to my Doc about it- will see if maybe they can refer me to one. I had quite bad pitting on my nails when AA first hit over 4yrs ago but they just got better in time - they're slightly worse this time round though. Ah well, it's all part n partial of this disease - no biggy! Ta for help though. Love K x
I have just noticed one nail is starting to peel away from the top, like the first thick layer of nail. I am going to do some research about this.
I'll let you know how I go
Kimberly
Hiya Kimberly! Ta, please let me know how you get on. Will let you know if I find out anything myself. Take care! Love K x
Ouch! Those are some scary pictures. I didn't see my AA-related changes there.
Hiya Susan! Thanks for the info and web page - yuk!! Hope you're well? Love K x
Kirsteen,

One thing that helped my nails with pitting and splitting was to get a regular manicure. Also, I keep my nails cut short. I find that if I let them get the least little big long that the splitting gets worse. Hope this helps!

Libby
Hiya Libby! Thanks for getting back to me. I too have to keep my nails short but like you may start treating myself to regular mani's lol! Love K x
Hiya Dominic! Thanks for getting back to me! Was kinda thinkin it was just the aggressive stage of AA as I had the same nail problem when AA first hit me over 4yrs ago and it just got better over time(cant remember how long though). I also have to keep them short cause it does hurt if a loose piece of nail gets caught on something and pulled - OOOOUUCH! Have never tried that hardening stuff though, will give it a go as its worth a try! Take care K x
Wow, good to know. I knew the pitting was part of the alopecia(that was the final nail in the coffin for my diagnosis) but the nails splitting just started a couple months ago for me. I had just chalked it up to a calcium deficit since I'm lactose intolerant. I have been taking calcium for it and seems to have helped a lot, didn't solve it completely though.
