I've had alopecia universalis for just over a year now and within the past month or so my nails started pitting, they break very easily (they've never been very strong), and now my worst nail is peeling. So far the peeling is on one of my thumbs, the top layer on the half of my nail closest to the tip came off. The cuticles are cracked which makes them slightly painful and the top of my thumb nail that is peeling is more sensitive. Has anyone else experienced this? It seems as it's only getting worse. Is there anything that works to make them healthy again?

I actually don't have cable so most of my TV watching doesn't include commercials, what's this 30 day challenge, could you add a link? -thnx

www.naturesbounty.com is the website for the "Nature's Bounty Extra Strength Hair, Skin and Nails Argan Oil Infused, 5,000mcg of Biotin" vitamins.  You buy the vitamins, use it for 30 days and you should see a difference in your hair skin and nails.  If you don't Nature's Bounty will refund you your money.  I have eyelashes but I started to notice the left eye top eyelashes started falling out and almost half of it was gone.  I saw the commercial a few times and said I'll give it a try. I believe it worked for me.  The eyelashes grew back in and have not fallen out.  I also noticed that my right eyebrow began to grow back in a little.  I haven't had any growth on that eyebrow for years.  I have my eyebrows cosmetically tattooed.

I purchased the vitamins through Puritan Pride when they had a sale so I paid $9.99 for 150 vitamins.  They also have a satisfaction guarantee.  If you are not completely satisfied they will refund you your money.  They are a reputable company. I use them all the time.

Jessica, you may also want to see your doctor.  Pitting may be a sign of a deficiency may be Zinc or Selenium.

Jessica - I recently started a combo of fishoil, One-A-Day, tumeric (curcumin), Cal-Mag-Zinc, and a strong probiotic.  Over four months I have had hair regrowth, eyebrow regrowth, and very fast growing less ribbed (never had pitting) fingernails.  Also really watching the ingredients in lotions and switching to Aveeno Eczema Therapy lotion and avoiding shampoos with cocamidopropyl betaine.  You might also check with your primary care doc re the pitting and vitamin changes.
