Hello, everyone. I'm new to AW, but have been dealing with what has been a very painful journey for me for about 20 years. I have been diagnosed with female pattern baldness, and tried everything from vitamins, special shampoos, scalp stimulation, Rogaine (when it was still prescription only), and even shaved my head for a few years and just wore wigs.

Most of my friends dismissed my pain saying they never noticed, but my scalp shows from front to back in the sunshine. Sparse enough on top that I can count the hairs in a square centimeter.

Anyway, I teach high school and I'm aware that students talk about it, but until this year I've never had an "incident" with it. This year, I had a student (who was angry about getting in trouble) scream that I was bald headed and had mange. Left me in tears right in the middle of class.

Over the summer, I have investigated my options, and ended up at a salon that does Virtuesse. It's painfully expensive, and I wish I'd found this site before I committed to the almost $3000/yr price tag. The stylist assures me it will look natural and that I can swim, shower, play sports, and style it as though it were actually my own hair.

I'm curious if any of you have experience with Virtuesse--or have suggestions for what I can do next year...I'm 42 and am tired of being almost paralyzed with anxiety about it.

Any encouragement is also welcome!

rose, thanks so much for taking the time to respond. wow...sounds like we have VERY similar stories...it is an encouragement, because noone i know (my age) has hairloss--save one dear friend who has alopecia totalis...has endured it since she was four years old and is almost 53 now. at any rate, i dare not complain to her...she doesn't have eyebrows, arm hair, or eyelashes.

the virtuesse system, as i understand it is human hair. i started crying pretty hard while the stylist explained the process to me, so i may get it wrong, but i think she said she will shave the top of my head (except the front hairline where my loss is a little less severe) and then use adhesive to glue the piece on. it's not a lace cap which has me a little concerned...it's almost like silicone.

i'm very active and have four young children that i take to the pool and i play league basketball. that's really why i decided to depart from wigs...well, not altogether. intimacy is important to me, and wigs just aren't practical then...

sorry to be oversharing, but i figure that's why we're all here.

thanks again...you have no idea what your kindness meant. been really down today.

I am a teacher, and just spend less than $150 per year on a synthetic wig that looks good.
hi, tallgirl! thanks so much for taking the time to reply to my post. i wore wigs for a few years..and like you, i spent generally between $150 and $300 for each wig which lasted about a year each. Unfortunately, though, for me, they were very hot and would slip back on my head if i didn't keep my head shaved. i didn't really mind shaving then, but now i live in the community i teach and go to the same pool where my students go...i just don't want to deal with the silly giggles and comments. don't want my children to have to, either.

thank you again for your post!

There must be pools in other school districts, hotel pools, or health club/apartment pools. Even lakes! Can you put in your own pool, or swim at a friend's pool? I used to wear a kefiya (sp) when I went to pools.

As to wigs' staying on...just tighten the elastic!
hi. at the salon where my daughter goes her stylist (who specializes in hair replacement) does tons of "toppers" where she sews beautiful hair pieces into one's own hair. it costs about $150 every 6 weeks. she orders custom and stock pieces from "follea". my girlfriend( who has alopecia as well and has diffuse scalp hair loss) goes to her also and gets a full wig sewn on. it looks great and it's so convenient. she said it took a little bit of time to be comfortable during the day and night but now she likes it a lot. just wanted to offer some insight.....been there with my daughter..
Hi s-welcome. I have Au so wear wigs but I can certainly see that you would benefit from a bonded topper because of your lifestyle-wanting to go swimming in public pools, do sports etc.

And the price for a good quality topper, from a well known wig maker, such as Flora, who uses European hair, is about $1800 and up-so your price is not so very much higher.

All of us need to start somewhere and then develop experience.

My main concern about a topper where you w ill be blending at the back and sides with your bio hair, is how difficult it is to match up with your bio hair. There are 3 kinds of hair these days being used-Asian/Chinese hair is processed and so kind of dry, but can be easily styled sleek, if that is your bio hair description.

Indian hair is kind of wavy/frizzy, but that works very well for some people.

EHH is often very soft, not much body, can also be sleek, or can be waved softly. There is a huge price difference.

I don't think "hair systems' companies reflect that price. I think they ALL charge high end prices for either Chinese or Indian hair-so you don't get much choice-but just thought I'd mention all that.

These systems were first marketed for men, so you will find more men on men's forums who can speak to how they work, and last.

You don't mention what color you wear, but it is all easier if you don't need light or blond.

Sounds like this will be a summer of new challenges but new freedom so I wish you luck.
hey i met up with the virtual reality hair and seen the virtuesse and i was just so not impressed she said the hair was highly processed and u have to go back every couple weeks and get it re glued. u should look at the mattyeandle wigs they are beautiful i love mine! or check out savvyshietels eigs or fortune wigs! they look beautful and itz good quality hair! get silk top its the m ost natural!
Hi Angelica-I agree that the wigs from those NYork and Brooklyn folks are lovely, but if a person isn't wanting to wear a wig, if they want a bonded topper, getting European hair is a bit more difficult.

I think Follea has EHH so wondering about a bonded topper option from a Follea distributor. I really don't know much about toppers, bonded or clipped.
