New to the site, with Androgenetic Alopecia for 5 years!

Hi everyone!  So I am seeing most of the members here have Alopecia Araeta, and I really cannot relate to this.  I was hoping to find some members with Androgenetic Alopecia.  I first noticed and was told about my extremely thin hair at age 19.  As time went by it got worse and worse and it finally got bad enough where I cracked and had to start seeing doctors.  I went to general dr.'s to check my blood for all sorts of deficiencies, diabetes, thyroid problems, etc.. nothing. Very healthy.  Then I went to a dermatologist where she was giving me cortizone shots every month.  7 months of that and I showed no improvement.  I was taking vitamins and stuff to see if that would help.. nothing.  I finally got a scalp biopsy and they told me it was androgenetic alopecia.  I began using rogaine, as that was all they told me i could do.  I have noticed a slight difference with rogaine... but while it helps a little, it doesnt help enough.  I still wont go swimming in front of others due to the fact that when my head it wet you can see quite a bit of my scalp.  My loving boyfriend who I have lived with for a year now has been sooo supportive.  I have known him for 10 years, but didnt tell him about this right away (we have only been dating for 2) At first it was so hard hiding the rogaine from him when we would stay with eachother, and shower at eachothers places... i had to keep my head in a towel til it was time to dry them hurry up and dry it so he wouldnt see... I had some serious self confidence issues and finally broke down and told him.  He didnt know what I was talking about (lor so he said)  Now when we talk about it, he does say the rogaine has helped... so I should keep doing that.  He doesnt think it is as bad as I do... but that doesnt matter to me.  I want my c ondifence back!  And if I can notice it, I am sure as hell others can!  I have looked into HairDirect.com which are hair peices I basically glue to the top of my head for a couple weeks at a time.  It is expensive, and drastic, so I am afraid to take that step.  I still feel as though I have options.  I want to go see a holistic doctor, but they are so expensive!!  I am saving up to do that right now...

Anyway... please let me know if there is anyone on here with androgenetic alopecia.  I need o find someone to relate to!!!

I'm hoping that i will look fab if i decide to shave it off lol i've asked my parents if they have dropped me when i was young cause i dont need surprises when i cut my hair off and my head is all bent out of shape. anyway agian welcome and you will find many who will be able to relate maybe not to the same hairloss but to how you feel. see ya

Welcome. I'm not sure what type of alopecia I have - I just know I'm bald now. I started with male pattern baldness than thinner and thinner. I went to a place that suggested I shave off some of the top so I can use their hair piece glued & taped. I should have known better within a few weeks it seem like more of my hair was coming off with every application. Very Expensive!!! 5 yrs later - I'm completely bald. I wonder sometimes if I would have tried a few things before shaving the top would I had seen results, but oh well here I am - too late to look back. I'm presently waiting for my vaccum wig which I hope is all that everyone says it is. Expensive, too but I think it would be less expensive than the glue thingy. What I've learned is that this site is a safe place to share your feelings. Once again, WELCOME!!
hi Sarah
I have androgenetic alopecia too.I started loosing my hair when I was a teen it wasn't quite obvious at first and yes I went through all the tests too and they were all normal
but now at 41 ,my hair is so thin i can't hide it no matter what, so i have to wear wigs or scarves
so if your thinning only shows when your hair is wet, then your condition is much much better than mine, and i urge you to go see a holistic doctor
good luck
