Hello. I am a 29 year old female that has been losing hair since March 2018 diffusely. I thought it was telogen effluvium, until I discovered a 1.5” bald patch on my head two weeks ago. It doesn’t seem to be growing in size, thankfully. The derm diagnosed me with AA. I was sad and scared. I still remain worried I will lose some of my eyebrows and eyelashes. I have always had thick head hair so I still have a decent amount left despite having it fall out every day for 9 months.

The real puzzling thing for me is I lose body hair in small spots. Like maybe in the underarm area, a little in the pubic area, and on my legs. The hair regrows and there is still hair on my body remaining. Does this imply I am progressing to AU or is this body hair loss a common symptom of AA? The head on my hair and also the bald patch is growing back which is a good sign. I was given cortisone shots for it.

is it possible my hair could just stop falling out or does my case sound too severe to have a more immediate end?

Thanks for reading! :)

This condition is so unpredictable that no one can tell you what will happen. The fact the hair grows back in is a very good sign.

I am so sorry you are losing any hair on your body. We wish we could tell you exactly what will happen but this condition of alopecia means there is no sure way to tell what’s going to happen. It’s so unpredictable and so different for everybody. Losing hair in patches is definitely alopecia areata.  I did not think there would be any change for me since I have had alopecia totalis for 50 years now. But about a year ago I had regrowth on the back of my head and the only thing I did different was start taking probiotics and supplements and eating good food. Check out the thread or discussion about probiotics and your gut health for turning off the auto immune disease. Hope something works for you!

Thanks for the input! After I saw the spot I immediately cut out gluten, artificial sugar, processed food, alcohol, and caffeine. I take biotin, zinc, a hair pill, turmeric, and vitamin d.

i hope this will help!
