I have very very thin hair and have been wearing wigs and weaves every day for 20 years. Although I do not have alopecia, I face some of the same problems and have experience I can share. Do I belong on this forum, or does anyone know of another site where I would fit in?

I am sure you are right here in this forum here. You share a similar story to most members of this forum. It must be hard to struggle with extreme thin hair already for 20 years and it would be really great to here more about how you manage to live with it. I am still struggling to accept my Alopecia.

I have been able to deal with my gradually thinning hair by wearing hair pieces, wigs, and sew-in weaves, but I will never get used to it!  I prefer weaves because I feel badly about myself if I wake up in the morning, look in the mirror, and see an unattractive woman with little hair, looking 25 years older than I do with hair. Waking up with hair on my head is worth the time and expense of getting weaves. I am not "me" without my well-groomed look.

When someone tells me I should just wear my own hair au naturel, it is hurtful and annoying; it is obvious that I don't look attractive that way; I don't look like  "me" that way. It is always a friend with a full head of hair who tells me that! They just do not know!

I live in a mid-size town with little ethnic diversity, so I am always on the lookout for someone who weaves hair (presently, there is only one woman here  that I know of). Salons here do "extensions", but not sew-in weaves---those are done by women in their own homes. And they are usually experts!

I've been through the gamut of hair situations: professional life, nightlife, dating, intimacy, working out, gardening, traveling, and the ringing doorbell when I don't have my wig on!  I have hair tricks and info I'm glad to share, and I also have questions. Right now I am trying to find an online site to buy blonde synthetic weave hair wefts. Very frustrating, and I keep hoping someone will direct me to a site.

But my situation is so different from yours: alopecia. I can use hair pins to secure a wig---you can't. I can have hair sewn into my own hair---you probably can't. I can clip in extensions---you probably cannot. I can imagine the frustration and self-esteem issues you must face.

I cannot accept fine, thinning hair, and I wouldn't think a person could "accept" alopecia. One can find solutions and ways to deal with the life-changing disorder, but I think the only people who can truly accept the condition without anguish are those who can be bravely bald and beautiful (or handsome).

You're more than welcome and don't be so hard on yourself!

In my experience? Thinning hair got me unsolicited advice, natural "cures" and success stories about their great Aunt Sally. No hair? Silence. :)

It's hard all around, let's stick together!

Hairloss is hairloss right?

Although you may not have alopecia areata be assured we are all connected with empathy, sympathy, understanding, and support!

Seek out members and groups that "Make it Work" for you!

Jeff
