I am a middle aged mom newly diagnosed with alopecia areata.
By my estimates, if I want to wear a monofilament, synthetic wig (ex: Raquel Welch, Amore seem good) it will cost me about $100/month because they only last a couple months used every day. Am I wrong? I just want a good low stress replacement for hair that will allow me to keep my health issues private. I got a Jon Renau Alia on sale. It doesn't move like real hair and the texture is rough to me. I am hoping Amore and Raquel Welch are more natural seeming. Opinions? I am not ready to buy a Freedom or Folea gripper because I still have hope this is just temporary.
So, I noticed Revlon sells human hair wigs, (for sale alongside synthetics) I notice they don't mention what kind of hair they are using (Remi etc). Do they turn into matted messes within a few washings? I am looking at a shorter versions because I have read long wigs don't last as long. Will human hair of unknown quality last longer than synthetics?
This wig purchase been like shopping for a space ship. Some are 4x the price of others. Do they just look better or do they last longer than the $95 mono Revlon wigs? There are so many confusing options and caveats. I don't have a wig shop nearby to look at them in person. Thanks for any help you can give me on this.

Message me and I will give you the site where I buy my daughter's wigs. They are human hair and super long and I pay a little over $400. It would be about 1/2 that if they were shorter. They look great.
Hi Karen - could you please send me the website where you order from? I too have this issue, I feel over whelmed with the many decisions of purchasing a wig! I wish I could just order off the net but my biggest worry is that it wont look 'real' enough!
Thanks :)
Hi Karen! Could you please send me this information as well?
Thanks so much!
Is the Alia a synthetic wig-not sure of what you meant there.
There are a couple of things that go wrong with hh wigs that are not EHH. They can tangle-and they can be lacking movement, not soft-getting to be dry fairly soon.
If they have had the shafts of hair made thinner-as I think the hair in Simply Beautiful has been done, then the hair is not likely to tangle because there won't be any cuticle. But the hair might not stay soft very long-and often there is silicon coating added at the factory to make the hair shiny and smooth-so when that washes off, the hair is less soft.
Revlon Simply Beautiful used to be Amore, and I have had one of those-about 8 inches long-it did not tangle as long as I kept putting conditioner on it. I also had a short RW blond hh wig-it was too short to tangle but was so dry and straw like that I never wore it-just felt stiff
Only a few of the Revlon Simply Beautiful are Remy-some women who have bought them say they are soft and are happy with them-but I don't think any of the shorter wigs come in Remi. Hard to comment on the price variations- but the best prices seem to be namebrandwigs, and Gallery of Wigs, an internet shop run by Kathy Tonkin who started the wig forum called www.wigsupport.com. Kathy Tonkin is also a very helpful person to talk to.
In my experience, even a non Remi hh wig will last longer than a synthetic, if you are able to take the time to give it a good deep conditoning from time to time, and use leave in conditioner regularly. Many people have another synthetic to wear around the house and keep their hh wig for going out or to work.
I hope you get other replies to your questions.Good luck

i wasted a lot of money bying several hh wigs before i reolized!!!that was not REMI it just tangled terrible no matter wot i did even tho they were expensive !!! so now i always make sure its remi hair they last around 6months if looked after i recomend ARGAN OIL shampoo, conditioner n serum plus daily leave in conditioner, i always have long hair! shedding not the problem but after 6mths they much too dry ( not helped by the fact they are heavily processed hair as i buy wigs for around £400 pounds that are bleached blonde)+ the lace front goes scruffy by then too....i prefer hh becose its so much cooler n less itchy!!! hope this helps :@)
I own 2 synthetic, one a Raquel Welch and another brand X, both purchased from local wig stores. I really don't understand why people say they must be replaced every month. I had both styled to look like my "before" pics and both are comfortable and cute and with good care, are lasting FAR beyond what some people say they do. Each wig cost a bit over 100 dollars and I doubt I will have to replace them any time soon. Also, when adding up the cost, remember to think of what you spent on haircuts etc and factor that amount into the cost. I paid 45 dollars every month for a cut, color and highlight. Plus all the specialty shampoos and conditioners etc really added up. I do miss my wonderful hairdresser, but perhaps that will return with hair regrowth. Ever happy and ever hopeful....JW
Thanks for the info. I will check those out! The people on this site are such a God Send!
