I have the same pattern. I've had it ever since I was diagnosed with alopecia areata at the age of 3. My AA has been stable up until now, but I've always had the ophiasis pattern, so I haven't been able to tie back my hair..ever. I have some regrowth at the back there now, but I'm not sure what has caused this as I was on prednisone for about 3 months last year.

Whenever my alopecia areata flares up, this is the area that is affected first.
I have it, too, in addition to AA. Though the spots fill in (as new ones appear) the area from my temples around back is not showing any sign if re-growth. Even letting the hair on top grow over that area is a strange look, like a waterfall over your skull. This is the oddest condition when you think about it!
Hats are key, especially in windy weather. You could definitely rock a fauxhawk, Nathan. My feeling is do what makes you feel happy and secure. We all have to handle this in our own way.
I have the ophiasis pattern hair loss and I'm rocking mohawk the best I can.
I too have the same pattern. It is definitely a stubborn one to get a hold of...I hadnt needed treatment for almost 2 years and then suddenly the front part of hairline soon receded and took an eyebrow...i havent been able to wear my hair up since ive had alopecia(about 5 years) because of the back but finally there is some regrowth along the entire hairline all around! I have been on prednisone (30mg) since feb as well as monthly injections. The derm has been able to get my eyebrow back as well as the other regrowth but of course its all patchy regrowth and i still have to cover it cause i get a lot of weird looks. BUT it is growing back! Very slowly...but surely... :)
what exactly is that pattern?
Hi, I, too have the Ophiasis pattern. Never had AA until about 8 months or so after my baby was born. Diagnosed in 2009. And I went from normal to Ophiasis in about two months. I took Prednisone for about 6 months, had to taper off at the end, and had almost complete regrowth. But alas, it is falling out again. I have one patch that just keeps getting bigger. So I'm just a bit scared that it is going to all fall out when it decides to kick into full gear again. Not having control over it is very frustrating. Sucks big time.

I have this pattern also, my dermatologist was cutting age when I was diagnosed back in 1965, he told my Mother and I about the Ophiasis pattern, he described it as being like a "snake wrapped around your head" lol.  Needless to say, my hair never grew in and shots and other therapy did not help.  My hair was pretty thick and long at that time, so I used to make a ponytail at the nape of my neck and it covered, but my hair has since fallen out in spots and on top so shaving works wonders for me!
