Hi-

I was diagnosed with Alopecia Areata in January 2013 and the remainder of my hair came out in July of this year.

I am seeing a new dermatologist that suggested two possible treatments, both had side effects and I was not overly-thrilled with either option. I feel like I am not doing anything to fight what is happening...I have not taken any type of treatment other than Nioxin shampoo treatments.

Methotrexate and Anthralin cream.

The methortrexate's side effects were not appealing...at all. The Anthalin cream was said to cause staining and I am now comfortable, at home, without my wig or head cover...I think staining would make me self-conscious again.

I just wondered if anyone had success with either treatments?

Thanks....appreciate any information.

Hi

At this time there is no cure for alopecia...that's the worst of it and I'm sorry to pass that on to you in such a blunt way.

Some people do feel treatments have helped them but in most instances it is fairly anecdotal...nothing really proven. So, be thoughtful about money spent on something that is not proven.

You will be offered the choice of prednisone (steroids). They will bring your hair back in most instances, but unless you have gone into a natural remission when you stop taking the drug your hair will once again fall out. You can not take prednisone (steroids) indefinately and even short term there can be some horrible side effects. So, do your homework if you feel this is an option you would like to try.

There are sensitising medications that are often used with alopecia as well...again do your homework as these can also have unpleasant side effects and be very uncomfortable while you are being treated.

I know this all sounds so horrible unhelpful, but this is what I understand as what is available at this time.
