I had prednisone in the late 1960s, then cut down to 1/2 pill daily, as my mom told me prednisone had made my grandmother's bones brittle. I don't know if the prednisone or cortisone shots did it, or if it was the wine, beer and partying at college...but my hair came in at age 20 (until mid thirties, after children). By the way, I had stopped the prednisone and cortisone during college, but feel one or the other may have played a part in continual periods. All became regular after I stopped taking those medications and just lived life.
Oral Steroids will work but with some serious side affects. I am on Sulfasalazine and will try out CellCept soon. Talk with your Dermatologists about the pros and cons of the meds I have listed. They are not without side affects either for some people. Fortunately, I have not responded negatively to the Sulfasalazine and it is rather safe as long as you arent allergic to Sulfa drugs or if you dont have preexisting liver disease. CellCept has its cons as well. For both drugs your doctor will closely monitor your blood count and blood levels to ensure your body doesnt respond negatively.
My hair grew back after taking prednisone for a few months, but it all fell out once I tapered off. It seems to be a temporary fix and not a medicine you can stay on long term due to it's impact on the body. I still thinks it's worth a try. Hope it works for you!
Hi! I took prendisone on and off for about 1.5 years, and it definitely helped my hair grow back. However, as soon as I stopped taking it, my hair fell out twice as bad. I actually think it ended up speeding up the hair loss. The side effects stink as well. I would carefully consider this option before you decide to take it.
I decided to start them, maybe this will be a one time session and it will never fall out again. Maybe this dosage will knock my immune system back out of whack. It worth a try at least for this one 7 week tapered dosing session. If it starts falling out again, I will not try prednisone again. What are the side effects? I seem to have a little headache, VERY VERY thirsty too. Been on for almost a week now.
Hi Kim,

How was the tapered dosing of prednisone? I'm about to start my 6 week tapered session today. I'm scared of the side effects and scared that I may end up worse off than when I started.

Let me know how it's going since it looks like you should have been on for a few weeks now. I'd appreciate if you could share your experience.

Thanks,
Julie
The side effects for me were dry mouth, weight gain, bloating, and nausea. It also ruins your internal organs if you take it for an extended period of time. Good luck, and don't be afraid to listen to your body and stop taking it if you feel ill.
Tapered means when you start with a higher dosage and then in time take less and less. For example, my prescription is to take 40mg every day for 2 weeks, then 30mg every day for 2 weeks, then 20mg every day for 2 weeks, then 10mg every other day.

I'm so scared to start. I'm supposed to start today, and I've just been staring at the bottle :(
Hi there,

I've been giving some updates in another discussion if you'd like to follow:
The discussion is "Oral Prednisone 40mg - Has anyone tried this?"
Posted by Julie R on August 7, 2010 at 12:05pm in Alopecia Areata

Short story is I'm doing OK so far, side effects aren't the worst right now. Not seeing any major regrowth. You can check out my comments in the other discussion for details though.

Take care and stay safe!
Julie, it was TERRIBLE. I took 7 pills a day for a week. I gained over 10 pounds in a week, my hands and feet got so swollen, dry mouth, headaches, sleep problems, eating ALL the time, and very grumpy! I had to tapper off them, it was too miserable. I already have this hair problem, then add all these other health issues on top of it, NO WAY. I'm not going to hurt my body like that. I have been told that you go through this whole process of steriods, see results, and then once you are off them, you go right back to hair loss and no growth. Its not worth it!
Thanks for sharing, Kim. I just started yesterday, and I'm going to see how it goes. I'm kinda desperate at this point, and I figure I can just taper off if I can't take the side effects either. I hope this works and I hope it doesn't end up worse. I'm really happy that I've gotten so much support through Alopecia World. I hope life is treating you well these days :)
Here is my story with prednisone/cortisone. Lost my hair at 18 after trying many different treatments, I had a dermatologist put me on prednisone, this was in late 70's early 80's. My hair grew back, Yaaaa. Dr. Kept my on a low dosage of prednisone......I THOUGHT I was living a normal life. Years later my dermatologist sent me to an endocrinologist to get tested to see if I can get off the prednisone or to see if my body was dependent on it. I got tested and was diagnosed with adrennal insufficiency, which can be life threatening if not treated. The last few years I have been having some major health issues, I have been on a high dosage of hydrocortisone, which is like prednisone but is more like what your body natuarally produces. I have been trying to taper off to a more manageable dosage and have been having a real hard time dealing with finding a manageable dosage. I am not trying to scare you but I sure do wish I was aware of ALL the side effects of this drug. If you do try prednisone only use it for a short amount of time......if your hair comes back do not be tempted to stay on the drug because your hair might fall out again. Losing our hair is not life threatening but sometimes the cure might be. Oh by the way I now have AU.
