I figured getting a wig would be easy but after finding out I have a petite size head (20 and half inches around) it's a bit more drama than I thought. Most wigs sold are average size and the petite sizes I've seen I don't really like and the petite are expensive. I'm wondering if anyone has had success with making an average size wig cap smaller to fit petite? Through sewing or some other way?

Can a head band like the milano brand keep an average size wig in place to fit a petite head. I'm really curious to hear your stories.

Thanks in advance!

It all depends where you are small. If it is mainly in the circumference, then adjusting the straps at the back will solve most of the problem. You will then probably have a slight bulge at the back-above the nape and if it is a wefted wig, you can join two wefts (needle and thread) together to make the wig shorter between nape and crown.

If you are small across the top of the head-in the measurement called "ear to ear" then I suggest a custom wig-but be wary, many companies don't do an actual custom down sizing (like say the lace wig companies who make according to all your measurement).

So you might order size small and end up with the same thing-a wig made smaller around the outer edge-feeling like it is too tight and going to pop off, and still too much cap across the top and down the back.

A good conversation with the company is necessary, and good customer service to get it right, to get a wig that is human hair and is petite all over. In synthetic of course there are ready made petite options.

Thanks for all the responses! I appreciate it.

Hello, I know petite wigs are hard to find, esp. something that seems trendy and today. A lot of petite wigs seem to be in old fashioned looking styles. I was just on a wig site and came across one I think is cute..a Gabor style called PERFECTION petite....I think it is kinda cute, and a cheaper price point to give it a try. Another petite style I have actually tried on is Petite Persuasion by Revlon Simply Beautiful. They are hard to find, but they are out there.

Approx 90% of wig wearers have average fitting wigs. This is approx. 22.5 inches around the hairline or where the hairline should be.

There is not a very big range of wigs for petite sizes or large sizes as the demand is not so great. Manufacturers are getting better with this and more of the small and larger sizes ARE coming onto the market.

To be sure about size, measure your head using a soft tape measure. Measure around the head, where the hair line is or should be, above the ears and to the front of the forehead .

Petite 20 - 21

Average 21.5- 22.5

Large 23 - 24

Please remember that all wigs have either velcro or slider adjustments at the back enabling the wig to be made smaller or larger. The above is just a guide.

A few wigs are made in size 18.5 - 19 inches. This size is for either an ultra petite fitting or a child. We find that generally, children do not wear wigs if they are very young.

Most of the wigs on our website are average and will fit the majority of wig wearers. If you need a petite wig or a large wig, the sections for these wigs can be found here:

I just both a Raquel Welch wig style "Easy Going". It is petite and oh so comfy. I love it.

You are right, finding good looking petites is difficult and in my experience the Milano band is useless. The cap on a regular wig can be adjusted but one needs to know how to sew and where the best places to take the cap in are. In a nutshell, put the wig on, then feel where the gaps are in the cap and mark them by taking bobby pins and securing the area. Take the wig off and sew together the wefting in the areas the bobby pins are. If a lot is taken in, you may have to adjust the sides of the cap also. This can be done by carefully cutting the band that surrounds the wig and re-sewing it flat. I usually cut it in the area that the manufacturer puts the adjustment elastic, I just cut that elastic off and then sew the cap to size. Use glue or fray check to seal the ends that have been cut. On lace wigs darts can be taken inside the cap to make it smaller.

My head measures 20.5, but I've never needed to take a wig in. I just adjust to the smallest size, but maybe I just kinda find smaller wigs anyway. But maybe that's why I get a horrible headache after 2-3 hrs. wear. ??? Maybe a petite wig that actually fit my head and I didn't have to have it so tight might eliminate the headaches???

Having a wig too tight could produce headaches, but I would think that if you are 20.5" the wig even on the tightest setting would loosen up over time and conform to your head thus eliminating any cause for a headache. There is no need for a wig to be so tight that it causes a headache, there are a variety of ways to attach that are not tight.

Don't wear very often....go around in my scraggly hair with ball cap most weekends. For work, I just wear my bio hair, I don't think they would be very understanding and accepting....This is my first job since hair loss started, and I feel I am being treated differently now. Maybe it is just the people who I work with that are different. ??
