Ive had the worst pitted nails since i have had alopecia... they are weak brittle tear away from the bottom layer leaving a soft coat of nail as a nail... its really strange i should take a picture
Try more calcium and magnesium?
My son's nails started with pitting and then they started flaking off. He ended up losing all of his fingernails and toenails. When we increased his biotin to 5000mcg per day they started growing back. I'm glad to say he has them all back, nice and strong (and needing to be cut right now).

Here's a photo of how they looked when they started flaking off. We sent photos to my son's dermatologist, who wrote him an excuse from swimming in PE. My son was actually glad he had the problem with his nails that prevented him from swimming - that meant he wouldn't have to take his hat off!

I've been told by the dermatologist that the pitting goes hand in hand with alopecia. I agree with Gordon. My son age 7 has AU and I've noticed that when he has some patches growing in or his eyelashes or eyebrows grow in that his nails look quite normal. I also notice the opposite that when his nails start to look pitted that his hair starts to fall out again. I used to give him biotin, but the docs never know if it's safe (don't know how much to give) and so I stopped a couple of years ago. I did notice that he gets hair regrowth during the times of the year that he is outdoors (Spring/summer). The sun has natural Vit D so perhaps that helps him. In the Fall/Winter he is mostly indoors since we homeschool and I notice that is when his hair decides to fall out. I'm very suspicious about this cycle.
Changes in your nails go with pretty much all autoimmune diseases. Go to http://www.vitacost.com and research supplements to take to help with your nails. Their prices are great. This is where I buy all my supplements. I have some pitting but I take a number of supplements and vitamins so my nails grow like crazy and are very strong. I also eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables.
Karen Grevious - what supplements do you take? I've always had an extremely healthful diet but have no luck strengthening my nails - even when I had hair! I want to start classical guitar lessons and I think I'll need at least a right hand with some nails. Any tips for supplements?
