I was recently diagnosed with Alopecia and am exploring options. I have been doing the topical treatment for about 2 weeks. My insurance does not cover the shots my dermatologist suggested. I would have to pay out of pocket and want to know if its worth it and how much did is cost all together.

I recently got the shots injected into my head, my insurance covers most of the cost but not all. I have had to pay about $30 out of pocket for the shots.

Here is the thing I am learning: I was recently diagnosed in March and I have gone through my fair share of treatment options with nothing working. Then I got the steroid shots in my head. I read that yours was about 3.5. Mine was the whole top of my head. I did have some regrowth of all white hairs where I had the injections but it quit after about two weeks. It was enough to know there was growth but far from covering my head. Then my hair started falling out in the back. My eyebrows and eyelashes are slowly but surely falling out. At this point I am ready to cut my loses. I pay a copay every doctors visit, plus what the insurance doesn't cover for the shots. It is too the point where I am so close to just shaving my head and being done. I think I have come to terms with it. I do still have quite a bit of hair because I am used to having thick thick hair but it hasn't stopped falling out since march.

I would at least give the shots a chance, but my doctors keep trying more and more treatments and they want me to do 12 weeks of light therapy that may or may not be covered by the insurance. The cost of treatments can add up with alopecia and it will always be a guessing game with the treatments.

I have an update. The topical treatment seems to be working a little bit. I have some peach fuzz growing back in some spots. My doctor convinced my insurance to pay for 20% of the injections so I only have to pay $65 per treatment. I am going yo try and see if it helps. I am very scared and nervous that once school starts back (I am a teacher) that my stress level will make it get worse again. Hopefully I can learn better stress coping skills by then. Thank you for the responses.
