Anyone try Rosemary essential oil for alopecia areata? My mom has recommended it to me but I'm not sure how to apply. I have a few obvious patches as well as general thinning in some areas too. I hate getting my hopes up for stuff but if it helps....

Yes, try it in a blend with cedar wood, lavender and thyme oils (a few drops of each in a carrier oil like grape seed). Massage it on the scalp at night. It has helped others:

the results of this study appear to be similar or slightly better than the old standard treatments of clobetasol and anthralin that a lot of dermatologists use as a first line of defense.

It's surprising no further studies (that I could find inside of 2 minutes) were done on this. Does anyone have real world experience?

That's what I was wondering! I had read that study and was curious about anybody on here trying it. I still have hair (albeit with some spots and general thinning) so I'm not sure how I'd do this without looking a hot greasy mess 24/7.

you do it at night before bed:

"The trained aromatherapist explained how to use the oils and demonstrated the technique of scalp massage. The oils were massaged into the scalp for a minimum of 2 minutes. A warm towel was then wrapped around the head to aid absorption of the oils. Patients were advised to use this technique every night.

There were 2 arms to the trial. The active group received the essential oils: Thyme vulgaris (2 drops, 88 mg), Lavandula agustifolia (3 drops, 108 mg), Rosmarinus officinalis (3 drops, 114 mg), and Cedrus atlantica (2 drops, 94 mg). These oils were mixed in a carrier oil, which was a combination of jojoba, 3 mL, and grapeseed, 20 mL, oils."

Don't skip the carrier oil, essential oils are strong and you can burn your skin if they are not diluted.

It seemed to help me for a time, like anything with hair-loss you have to try for several months before you make a call. I wonder if it's not the aromatherapy aspect of the oils, but that the plant compounds make a kind of anti-inflammatory treatment, or natural JAK inhibitor.

I already eat gluten free, have long before alopecia struck. But I do think eating GF is generally easier on people's bodies, especially those of us with autoimmune issues! I have a few myself.

I remember reading this from the archives of Dermatology in 2004. It was already six years old.

Aromatherapy oils will make your pillow smell nice.

Essential oils, blocked chakras and gluten free have done nothing to stop immune cells attacking hair follicles.

Yeah, I had been eating gluten free for a while when I first got alopecia so definitely not that for me anyway! Lol! I don't know anything about chakras but essential oils have helped with some conditions for me, namely headaches and insomnia. I mean, many pharmaceuticals are synthetic versions of natural chemicals and substances found in plants, mold, ect. Perhaps rosemary increases blood flow to the scalp? I read that it had similar efficacy to minoxidil for androgentic alopecia. I don't really like to try 'remedies' for alopecia specifically. I prefer to treat my whole body in a healthy way. In fact that's the main reason I won't do steroid shots or even look into xeljanz. I am ready to shave my head if I lose much more on top.

I did wear wigs for a while and I would be wearing a different color or length every time I saw anyone. I'm not shy about it, I certainly can't help that my body is attacking my hair follicles! My main complaint is that whenever I start another losing cycle, my mom is quick to tell me to stop stressing and then offer up remedies. I figured it'd pop on here and ask for personal experience with rosemary because she gave me a bottle of it and I feel bad not even trying it, but I kind of don't want to even mess with it.

I wonder if they do a recipe for hair loss?

It's completely bonkers what essential oils are supposed to do!

don't forget that it is "supposed to" according to the people marketing them. cure cancer, solve world hunger, end poverty, take out the trash, this specially formulated snake oil can do it all!!!
