Hi there,
I've been diagnosed with alopecia areata a few months ago. It started with bald patches on my chin and I've now got many large bald patches on my head. Fortunately, I've been sporting a shaved head look before AA and not much has changed in my life (except for not being able to grow a full beard anymore). I've come to terms with alopecia but I do have some worries:

- I've heard that the longer alopecia is left untreated, the higher the chance of permanent hair loss. Is this true?
- I fear that I might lose my eyebrows and eyelashes one day. Is the anything I can do about that?
- What are your thoughts on leaving alopecia untreated?

Thanks for listening,

hi Aimee, thanks for the reply. I've had bloodwork done by my dermatologist and was under treatment for a short while. The treatment involved creams and steroid pills. I decided to get off the treatment for a while because it was too much stress over lost hair that I was shaving off anyway.

My father, who is a general doctor, recommends that I do not delay treatment because the hair might be permanently lost. Although he admits that he doesn't know for sure since it is not within his field of expertise. I am wondering if anyone else has a similar experience where treatment is delayed for months or years followed by hair regrowth with or without treatment afterwards.
I would highly recommend the cortisone shots. I didn't treat mine at first, and the hair fell out rapidly. Since I've begun the alopecia treatments it has almost fully regrown within a year.
Congratulations on the progress :) I will keep cortisone shots in mind if there doesn't seem to be any regrowth. thanks
