Hi everyone, my name is Hayley and I'm 26 years old.
Three months ago I found a small coin sized bald spot on the top of the back of my head since then it has grown to 4x5 inches, my part has thinned considerably and I have 2 smaller spots in my bangs about the size of loonies. I have lost an outstanding amount of hair but with careful techniques, high sock buns and thick head bands I can hide it pretty well for the most part.
I've been thinking about shaving my head for about a month now but this seems to confuse people who rationalize that if I can hide it it's silly to shave it off. This makes me question if I'm being to drastic.
When I get ready in the morning doing my hair, something I used to enjoy, feels like a burden. It's difficult to make every hair lay just right so that my spots don't show and I know that the best case scenario is to have all my hair tucked up and away and then covered with a think band...the worst being that my hair will fall out of place exposing an embarrassing spot. Dealing with my hair everday and knowing I can't wear it in ways that make me feel good makes me feel discouraged.

As soon as I decide to shave it I start doubting myself, I've gone back and forth a million times. How and why did you decide to shave or not to shave your head? When did you know it was time?

I feel the same way. It is a big decision, and it is big that you are even considering it. With me, it was a slow progression. I cut my hair short, then shorter, then shorter. Then, I bought clippers to give myself a buzz cut. Then, I found out about the HeadBlade so I bought one to shave my head. I now keep my hair in a buzz cut or shaved head. I wear wigs/scarves/hats as well. I am in such a better place now due to all of it. I will say that I have AGA so that is a little different. I'm not expecting my hair to come back ever so I can learn to deal with it differently. I would say to consider all your options. I will tell you that if you start shaving your head, the hair that you have may grow back quickly. For example, in order for my head to always be smooth, I would have to shave my head daily. My skin is so sensitive that it can't handle that so I don't shave very often. It stays in a buzz cut more often. I think you will know when you are ready. For me, it was after I started wearing wigs full time. One day, I came to realize that I didn't need my bio hair anymore. I've never looked back.
