Hi All,

I haven't shaved the rest of my hair yet, but it is very quickly going in that direction! I have to wear a hat or a bandana to cover as I can no longer pretend that I have enough hair to hide all the spots. I am looking for a human hair option- anyone have any suggestions on where to begin looking? Anyone have a human hair wig they love? Are there any that stay on without tape? I have heard of soft vacuum wigs but I don't know anything about them or who makes them. Anyone wear them? What do you think?

Thanks so much for your help!

Honestly - we're not completely familiar with something called a "soft" vacuum wig and apologize for that. Many wigs use clip combs to help keep them in place. Most wigs come with a strap inside that let you loosen or tighten the cap.

Regarding human hair, remember to be aware of anything labeled "real hair" - all human hair is real but not all real hair is human. Human hair is also susceptible to the elements (humidity).

There are also 1/2 and 3/4 wigs if you feel you can get by without a full wig. Keep in touch about the soft vacuum wig as I'd be interested to learn more about it.
Hello, I believe you are talking about the vacuum wigs, they do look very good and is custom made for a great fit. Please keep in mind a few thins with those wigs one they are very hot, two they are very expensive, three they take long to have made. There are many human hair options available on the market some better than others. There is a custom hand made glue free lace wig that offers all the style options combine with a light weight cap and high quality human hair that cost a lot less than the vacuum wigs. Please see pictures on a few below

Hi

It might help if you talk to people that have a soft vacuum wig. There is a group of people here that wear Freedom Wigs and I'm sure they would be happy to help with some information on their experiences. The group is called 'alopecians who have a freedom wig! (or are getting one)'.

I'm happy to pass on any information as well as my daughter has worn this type of prosthesis for the last 6 years.

Good luck with your investigations.

Hi Courtney!
I just wanted to let you know that I'm on my 6th wig, and I've found that synthetic wigs are a much better option than human hair wigs. My first wig was human hair, and I found it very hard to do anything with. It was really heavy and the hair was almost limp, and was hard to deal with and wear on a regular basis. I've found that human hair wigs are more suitable for cancer patients. My current wig, however, is synthetic and is make from a material called 'Cyber Hair' which is the most human hair-like synthetic hair. I've found that it actually feels more like human hair than my first wig, which sounds sort of ridiculous but is true. I'd definately suggest lookinginto this type of wig, because us with alopecia need wigs for living, not for chemo, so a lighter, more flexible wig is much easer.. Hope this helps!

Hi Courtney - I'm no expert, having tried unsuccessfully to wear wigs for about a year. But, I will share my experience with a human hair wig.

I bought what I thought was a good quality human hair wig by a major wig company from a large wig store where I live. It cost about $650, and was a smooth, straight, short style . It looked great - until the first time that I washed it. Then it reverted to its original character, which was very wiry and wavy. When I asked the store why it looked like that, they told me it was probably hair from India. That type of hair would look great in a longer style, but it didn't work for the smooth, chin-length style the wig came in.

I bought a straightening/flattening iron for about $80, and tried to smooth it out. It helped a little, but I couldn't make it look as it had originally. Then I took it to a hair stylist. He couldn't do anything with it. Finally, I took it back to the wig store and said either you make it look as it did when I bought it (and I gave them photos of me in the wig as it had looked originally), or you give me a store credit. They couldn't make it look as it had originally, so they gave me a credit for the entire amount. I still haven't used all of the credit because I've since realized that the heat of any wig makes them unwearable for me. (I gave my synthetic short wig to a good friend who has cancer.)

I hope you find a wig that works for you - just be aware that the less expensive human hair wigs might be highly processed and look very different after washing.

I have worn a Freedom vacuum wig for the past year and I love it! For me, it was definitely the best option. Some things to consider though are that they are very expensive (but they last a long time) and if you still have hair, this needs to be shaved off to get the best fit. I have got quite a bit of regrowth at the moment and it is annoying to have to shave it every few days. But I won't wear any other type of wig now. These wigs look very natural, are incredibly secure and are very comfortable to wear. (I used to get a very itchy scalp from a regular wig). If you have any other questions, just ask :)

Oh and on cheaper human hair wigs, I personally wouldn't go there - my wig before this one was human hair, but it had obviously been very processsed. After only wearing it a few times, it began to feel like straw and the hair matted terribly - not fun.
