Squaric acid treatments
I am looking for some opinions and insite...
A new Derm that I went to see this week at Hershey Medical center here in PA who is a Scalp and skin specialist has suggested I try squaric acid treatment.
Has anyone used this treatment and what is your opinion or outcome? I know everyone reacts differently but just trying to see if this is something I want to try.

I have AT/AU and it worked for me. I started treating in June 2013 and by November I had full hair and eyebrows back. Some itchiness here and there but nothing I could not cope with. It only was very itchy for like one night when I was sensitizing it.
Now it seems that my body is getting used to it, so the weekly does I need is 100 times stronger. But still totally worth thus far.

My son is 3 years old and we recently started the squaric acid, thank God he reacted and has started regrowth. He is AU. Have you continued with treatment? Did you go into remission or did you relapse? How are you doing now?

Hi Marisa,
glad to hear that! I went into relapse around a year after and my doctor increased the dose from 0.01% to 1%, and it has re-grown again after a few months. It can get very itchy with the 1% (itchy enough to wake me up at night), so I am not sure how a 3 year old may deal with that. I am sure your doctor will know better. The good news is, I only had a relapse on a small patch on my left side, the right side of my head keeps growing hair with no medicine in 6 months. So I am now back to full hair after 15 months of treatment.

Hi Guillem, That is great and very encouraging. My son started at .003 and went up to 3%! It was not fun to say the least. It was very difficult and very stressful. We are back to .03 which he tolerates very well and we are just beginning his fourth month of treatment. Did you have complete regrowth on your eyelashes and eyebrows too? Were you only on those two concentrations for your entire treatment? Thank you so much for your response and pray for your continued remission.

Grimbau, I am confused as to how this works once hair starts growing. I am currently on 0.1 percent for about two months and have had a lot of regrowth. I know I have to continue doing this every week, but for how long? Do you still put it on every week even with full hair regrowth?

Has anyone with AU tried this thing? How effective is it? Does it work for most people? Also, What type of doctor would carry this? I asked my Derm about it but he knew nothing

got 80% back after 3-4 months of use, lost it all in a few weeks. 60-70% chance of relapse. Would not recommend

What type of doctor would have this? My Derm knew nothing about this at all.

My dermatologist calls in my SADBE (squaric acid dibutylester) prescription to a pharmacy that does compounding. Had to try multiple dosing options until one worked.
Would switch derms if your doc doesn't know of this option - not because it's the best option or necessarily the right one for you but because it is one of the standard alternative options to treat alopecia and if your provider isn't familiar with this as an option and can't discuss this as one of your many options for treatment, he/she may not be reviewing current medical literature re alopecia treatment options.
