Stories from the front lines...or really weird/funny things that have happened over the years

Okay, from time to time I will post something odd/funny that happened to me in regards to my alopecia areata.

I have had AA for 41 years so far, and there is a lot of time for story fodder. Things that make me laugh looking back at them.  Some might read some and say "how is that funny?"  And to them I say...Personally, I made a decision a long time ago that Alopecia was not going to define my view of the world...at least not in a negative way.

I'll start off with a cute little story of being a dad...and the look you get when it's bath time and you don't have any idea what to do in regards to a simple task.

My daughter was a few months old, and my wife had been bathing her regularly since I was working a lot and she was home at the time.  A month or so into it, she looked at me and said that I was going to have to start helping, which I had no problem with, I was actually looking forward to it.

We drew the bath and got her into the little tubby thing.  My wife looks at me and says, "wash her hair and I will be right back.  With that she left the room.  She returned a few minutes later with me splashing Hannah with water.  Hair still dry.

She just looked at me with that look that says, what are you doing?  She wassn't mad, and simply told me that I wasn't going to hurt her by washing her hair.  I nodded and said simply, "I have no idea what I am doing."

Quizzical look and then it dawned on her.  "Just a little drop of shampoo is enough to do her hair."  Then she started laughing.  As did I as I washed the babies hair.  "You really had no idea how much shampoo to use?"

"Nope.  Never used it, and when I did get my hair washed, my mom did it cause I was three."

We still laugh about it to this day.

Kids can be the best for making us feel better about ourselves.

Once upon a time I worked for a company called EDS.  Ya know, the one started by the guy who ran for President...but I digress.

As it would happen, also working in a group I eventually joined was another gentleman who had Alopecia.  Kinda cool to be able to talk with someone with it.

At a Christmas function one year, I was mingling and my wife had to go out of the room for a minute.  When she finally caught up with me again, she was loosing the redness in her face.  She told me that she came within inches of hugging the other guy from behind.  It was only when she realized that I didn't own a suit that color that stopped her.

Dangers of being married to a tall bald guy when he ends up working with another tall bald guy.

Well we had a clogged sink. Our plumber got a big kick out of blaming me for the clog. He kept telling my husband that, 'your wife is clogging up the sink with her hair'. My husband said ok. I gave him this look and his eyes got wide as the plumber stated it again. All I responded was, "I can assure you, its not my hair". We got a good laugh after he left.

My 14 year-old son decided to grow his hair out and before long was wearing a crazy looking afro. A male acquaintance came by my house and after some time talking to my son he asked my son why he'd let his hair get so long. My son just shrugged. I replied that I made a pack with my kids that they could do what they want with their hair within reason because their father had lost his hair at a very young age (19). I went on to say that I didn't have a problem with them coloring, shaving, locking, etc. The guy replied "well actually male pattern baldness comes from the mother side of the family". My son and I looked at each other - his eyes big with a silly grin - I simply said "oh really" (blink blink). We could barely contain our laughter. The guy just kind of looked at us, like "what'd I say". We still laugh about that.
