Has anyone had any luck with these medications? Curious because I may be put on a combination of two of these. Side affects? Are they truly dangerous to kidneys or Liver?

Are these being considered for another condition, & you're hoping they'll help re-grow your hair? These drugs are big guns with lots of serious side effects. There's no way I'd use the combo for something that wasn't life-threatening or extremely disabling. See for example, http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/meds/a682019.html
Hi Karen, has your daughter tried one of the irritant treatments. My 8 yr old has grown most of it all back from head to toe with SADBE. Cindy
Wow! Everything I have heard about these treatments has been positive. I have heard rumors of side affects but nothing that a doctor can't test for or treat. Usually the symptoms go away after you stop taking the medication.
Eric, I don't want to be a wet blanket, but these drugs often cause VERY serious side effects (cancers, liver failure, kidney failure, inability to fight infection, seizures, . . .). I have seen people die from the side effects even when they received prompt good treatment. The US National Institutes of Health link I posted above starts, "Methotrexate may cause very serious side effects. Some side effects of methotrexate may cause death. You should only take methotrexate to treat life-threatening cancer, or certain other conditions that are very severe and that cannot be treated with other medications."

Please, before you take powerful medications like these (esp in combination), obtain reliable information about their risks and the likelihood of their benefits. Wishing you the very best, Lisa
Hi Eric,

I was on and off of prendisone for about 1.5 years, and I DO NOT recommend taking it. The side effects include bloating, weight gain, and dizziness (all of which I experienced), and although it initially helped my hair grow in, as soon as I went off of the pill my hair would fall out twice as bad! In my experience it made my hair loss much worse.

Prednisone is the only thing that could make my hair grow back. Side errects are pretty brutal though. You may want to try cycles. I had a Dr put me on a high dose, once a month. I didnt get the side effects, and I had some regrowth. I was actually thinknig about trying it again.
oh, and you cant stop prednisone...once you do...hair comes back out ; ( thats why its really not the best treatment.
Sulfasalazine seems harmless. I know about Prednisone...I have taken it before. You are right about the methyltrexate. Some bad stuff!+
I just began a 2 week cycle of Prednisone and I don't think it's working... Given it's only day 4, I still think I'm losing hair and I think side effects I may be having are definite insomnia and wicked mood swings, I'll be super happy and upbeat, and then just craaaaanky. Having just looked at the list of possible side effects both minor and major, via Lisa Santer's link, I don't know if I would have began taking it... Especially since I don't think it's doing anything... Natalie's comment doesn't make me very hopeful either... But it very well may be too soon to tell if it is working, only time will tell. I would definitely check out the link and maybe ask your doctor more specifically? I also wonder if mixing/combining the drugs, how that will affect side effects? That might be another good question to ask? Good luck with whatever you decide to do!! :)
