Hey everyone.

I remember posting a few months ago about how my scalp was extremely itchy and had a burning sensation after I went to a hair salon to get it cut. Well, since that week (in February) I have been using Nature's Gate tea tree shampoo and it has calmed my scalp pain. A week or so ago I switched back to regular shampoo (just because I had it sitting around) and used that for a few days. My head started to itch and burn, and I noticed more hair falling out in the shower.
There are other variables that could have caused the itchiness (such as a constant sunburn from my seasonal summer job) but I believe that it is the shampoo. I immediately switched back and the burning stopped.

Have there been any studies on sulfate sensitivity in alopecia patients? I am just curious, because now I am switching to completely sulfate-free shampoos!

Feel free to share your thoughts!

Hi, just wondering if your using anything else on your scalp? I developed a sensitivity to Minoxidil, my scalp itched and got really flaky. I tried dandruff shampoo, but it burned like crazy. I think any sensitivity will do this. I'm thinking of trying your new shampoo myself, as my scalp is better (using Nioxin) but still tends to be extremely dry and flaky. Dont think it's dandruff, I've never had a problem with it in the past. My hairdresser said she thinks it just supper dry. I would continue with the tea tree shampoo. I have tried a sulfate free shampoo made by Loreal, but I didn't like the way my hair felt using it (not shiny or clean) Hope your scalp gets better.

Minoxidil? I will have to do some research on that one. Sorry for such a late response- I was doing field research and had limited internet! I have continued using Sulfate free shampoos- "Organix" is a quick buy if you do not have a whole foods/ organics store nearby. It is THE only sulfate free shampoo in any regular drug store (CVS, rite-aid, etc). So far it has not burned or itched since I started using it, but I plan to switch over to Nature's Gate every other month just to change things up. I am also careful when I go to get my hair cut- I make sure the hair stylist is using sulfate free shampoo. :) Apparently "rockaholic" shampoo by TIGI is sulfate free, so the stylist used it when he washed my hair. Dandruff shampoo would be the worst solution, seeing as it contains all of those harsh chemicals. However, a dry scalp in the summer does not make sense. Now it is winter and my head is alright! I will stick to sulfate free!

What kind of shampoo are you using? If you have dry scalp and color treated hair, I Just recommend you to use Gnatural oh so that is made up of natural herbs without sulfate to ensure maximum conditioning for color treated hair.
