Hello-I've also been researching.My daughter has asthma and I read nasal is contra-indicated for asthma pts. Also for children under age 10,2 half doses is recommended-I would opt for this at any age. Apparently NovaRTIS' 'adjuvant',aluminum salts, can be inflammatory. HI Edie,

I cant provide you any specific advises or thoughts. As you know, the only predictable thing about aa is unpredictable, and definitely no one is sure whether will the nasal mist vaccine for swine flu will trigger aa for your kids. I am not sure of the specific risk due to the vaccine, as far as the risk between swine flu/ influenza A H1N1 infection and alopecia areata, it is obvious that Influenza A H1N1/swine flu is life-threatening where as aa is not. As long as the vaccine is approved for public vaccination programme by FDA, recommended by the government and healthcare officials, it should be okay generally.

while it is always widely believed that AA could be triggered by stress, and it is a world-wide fact that vaccines can only be administered in healthy individuals, and I guess it would be nice to inform the healthcare official that your kids have history of aa before receiving the swine flu vaccine. Without being specific, its seems to be a choice between protecting the kids' lung or hair. Just a thought, you have the final call, no matter what, you'll have my support :).

Tricky but very good question! If the kids don't have alopecia at the moment I have no clue as to whether they retained their hightened immune system (probably not which is why the hair came back) however those with healthy immune systems SHOULD be fine without any vaccines. Of course I myself am biased against the vaccines for the flu and swine flu, there are tons of videos on the news and on facebook which heavily contradict each other and all from proffesionals in the medical or scientific fields. I tend to believe that nowhere near enough research (especially extensive research) is done on these vaccines which are pumped out too fast in order to "save" everyone from a fast acting virus that is imminent. Canadian research indicates that if you are going to get a flu shot this year, you are better off only getting the swine flu vaccine. Keep in mind that just the regular flu shot that anyone working in a hospital is required to take was only taken by 50% of the staff at one Toronto hospital and there have been numerous articles about nurses that refuse to take the vaccine themselves or allow family to get it. In general, the old, the young and those with weak immune systems are encouraged to take the vaccine but it all comes down to your own personal feeling and beliefs and if you feel uncomfortable with it in the first place either more research is needed on your behalf or you simply refuse it. I've never been a big advocate for flu shots. My daughter with AA has Asthma and an egg allergy so she can't take it anyway. As for immunization shots, my daughter's pediatrician didn't want to give her the shot she was due for because of her AA at her last physical. That tells me doctors don't have a real clue what overall effect these shots can have on a body especially one that is going haywire.

I have been looking into this issue a lot lately. I know this is a really touchy issue, because you have to decide if the risk of the vaccine is greater than the risk of the flu. I personally do not want to take it because I do not trust the pharmacudical industries because they are greedy and there are known risks of all vaccines such as the mercury in it let alone the fact that this vaccine isnt even properly tested. I take vitamin d pills because in my research i found that it is highly believed to prevent against the flu. you can search vitamin d flu in youtube to get some videos about it. I feel the mainstream new is a very biased source as they are all funded by the very pharmacudical companies that put out the flu vaccine.

Right now there are not too many deaths from the swine flu and there is plenty of evidence against the vaccine. I hope the site I gave you can help you some in your research.

Hi All,

I appreciate everyone's input....after much thought, I decided not to give it to them. Since my children have never had ANY flu shot, I felt we had no track record to go by. My son started the school year with the flu (tested postive) but we didn't test to see it was the Swine Flu. He recovered. For now we will wait. But thank you all.

I am so glad to see other parents with this exact concern. My daughter's school just sent out a notice that they will be giving out the H1N1 vaccine if there is a consent. My husband and I feel there is a strong chance that her alopecia universalis was activated when she was 2 after the vaccinations required. I called her pediatrician and all I got was the CDC recommends it and that is all they would say.
I do believe I will not have her get the vaccine, even though she is bald, her eyelashes did grow back and I want them to stay.

I've been reading about of the possible side effect of the H1N1 vaccination s called Guillain-Barré Syndrome – GBS which is pretty rare. GBS is an autoimmune neurological disorder which can not only be triggered by the flu or other infections, but also by vaccines used to prevent infections. This is because vaccines are designed to stimulate the immune system, to provoke an immune response – which is what causes GBS. Research has suggested that autoimmunity is genetically predisposed in certain individuals and that a person can develope more than one autoimmune disorder. My fear would be triggering one the other more severe disorders like GBS. Also, one article I read suggests using the shot for person with an autoimmune disorder. However, my daughter has asthma which apparently should use the mist. She is also allergic to egg of which both the flu mist and flu shot are cultured in. So... We aren't doing anymore vaccinations of any kind. We are trying for the natural remedies, feeding her high quality, organic food, avoiding foods she sensitive to, and keeping her immune system balanced and strong with supplements.
So far, no aesthma, no allergy system, and very mild symptoms when she does get sick.

All I know is my son got AA almost immediatly after H1N1 vaccine. It's been 6 months and his hair is completly gone including eyebrows and eyelashes.

Hi Coreena,
My daughter also got the alopecia area within 2 weeks of the vaccine, we live in sweden and doctor doesn't accept that it has come due to vaccine. Did you get it cured? We are still struggling and don't know any way out.
