Hi There!

Today was our first day back after Christmas break (We had two extended snow days here in IL!) and I wore my wig for the first time to school.  I got great reactions from the staff.  The kids were mystified by it (4th and 5th grade ESL) and some were kind of rude.  I did tell them that I have alopecia and that my hair was falling out, and they seemed to take it ok.  I just want them to be over it and move on.  Do you think I did the right thing by telling them that it is a wig and the truth about what's going on or should I have dismissed it all together?  I know it's too late, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

Thanks!

I think being honest is the easiest thing for YOU and that's what really counts. Then you don't have to wonder if they know or not.

Aimee,  I think it's a "Gabor" wig!

I do believe it was a good decision to be transparent.  I teach undergraduate students and have a clinical practice with children and teens.  For the most part I wear either scarfs or hats.  One evening while running a support group, one of my young clients asked about my hair loss (I'm bald).  I shared my story about AU.  The response was relief as they all thought I had cancer.  They asked questions and moved on.  I am not ashamed of having AU...I don't keep it a secret.  My comfort level allows me to model for both my clients and students.

That's awesome.  I think it was ok to teach them about the condition.  I still have hair, but it's pretty thin in the back and sides (You can see my scalp very clearly)  My MIL bought be this wig last year when I lost even more of my hair.  I like to wear it out and things like that, but have never worn it to work.  The only problem, wearing it all day isn't very comfortable.  Oh well, too late to go back now!

absolutely. I think you handled that a+.

I remember when I was a kid and a teacher walked in wearing a new wig. Of course we all noticed right away but before we could say anything she said "yes, I got a new wig".

of course we all noticed and were all wondering so no harm done in bringing it out into the open.

as an adult, I applaud her brutal honesty - and I applaud yours as well.

If it were some unnoticeable medical condition, no sense bringing it into the open. however if it is something that they would notice, like a wig or a broken leg, I don't see the sense in hiding it.
