I had my first appointment with the dermatologist today. He confirmed my GP's diagnosis of alopecia areata and told me these are difficult cases. Then he gave me kenalog shots to the affected area (with more to come in six weeks), a prescription for Clobex and as well wants me using Creastim and Vivsical professional tablets. The nurse explained they're basically trying everything at the same time. I'm not complaining and will definitely use everything they advised, just wondering if anybody else's dermatologist went with the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approach from the get go?

They just want your money.....I will bet none of that will do any good at all. They see you coming because you are desperate......just my opinion...he said they were difficult cases because he KNEW nothing he did was going to work....but wanted you to keep coming back over and over again...
I can see why you'd say that but he's actually the most highly regarded dermatologist in the area, and a friend of mine who works in the local hospital and hears about the reputations of all the doctors said the same. The shots and prescription won't cost me anything because I'm in Canada, but the Creastim and Viviscal do, although hopefully I can get the $ back from my insurance.
someone is paying him....the government? Anyway doubt any will work....just sayin'
Some people do say the kenalog shots have worked for them so I believe there's hope. Hell, no point in doing anything if I'm not going to have a positive attitude about it. And if over time it doesn't, I'm thinking about PRP or LDN.
And every doctor out there is getting paid...just sayin'. That's neither here nor there.
Just wanted to add to my original thread and report that the kenalog shots and Clobex combo is working pretty well. I just had my third set of shots earlier today and at the dermatologist's office they were happy with the regrowth they're seeing. My large bold spot is by no means covered but it's shrinking and has both brown hair and weird uber-white hairs growing in. The doc says the colour will eventually return to the white hair too.
Updating again to say I had my fourth round of kenalog shots yesterday morning. I started getting injections to the scalp in April and who's to say whether the hair might have regrown anyway but it's amazing the way my once enormous bald spot (it was a wasteland four inches wide and spanning from the top tip of my ear down) has been filling in. The spot's not entirely gone yet but it's gotten to the stage that I no longer feel self-conscious about it or even think about it that much and my dermatologist is very happy with the results we've been achieving. The itching has stopped too. So for anyone here who is thinking about getting kenalog shots to the scalp, I can report the approach has been working for me, and I'd consider if worth a try.
One round! What a great result. Thanks for sharing that.
