Hello everyone, I have androgenetic alopecia and while I am on treatment of Rogaine, I've noticed a drastic change in the hair volume and scalp density...now the scalp is becoming more and more visible.

I am thinking of getting a wig that looks like my natural hair before I lost it, unfortunately I am a university student and so cannot afford outrageously expensive human hair wigs.

What are some good wig shops in Toronto? Thanks!

Hi Mariam,

There are some good options in the Toronto area.  I am the Freedom Wig representative for the area and I know that some of my clients have come with some nice looking hairpieces from Gabi's wigs before they made the switch to Freedom.  I don't know what the prices are exactly but she may be worth checking out.

Good luck with your search

Hi Mariam,

I live in Toronto also and I highly recommend going to see Juliet at the Hair Prosthesis Centre. Here are her coordinates:

500 Glencairn Ave #2, North York, ON M6B 1Z1 ‎
(416) 787-1550
I have found Juliet to be very compassionate and very good at what she does. Please contact me if you want more info on the wig that I get from her. I've had alopecia for close to 40 years and the wig that she has gotten for me is by far my favourite and was more affordable than many others.

It also sounds as if you need an assessment to see if you can make use of a topper rather than a wig. Partly that depends on what your bio hair texture now is, and whether it is possible to blend it and match it with wig hair. And that also depends on color-it seems easier to match bio hair that is brown than blond. It sounds as if you are looking for human hair, not synthetic. Besides the good suggestions made by the above members, If you don't need a light blond, there is Allegria that sells nice European human hair wigs but not too many blond ones.

If you are thinking of a synthetic wig, there is a salon called Hair and Wigs, 719 Danforth Avenue,
Toronto, ON, Canada,

There is also an online store in Ottawa called Gorgeous Wigs- her prices are better than the above Toronto place for synthetic wigs-but before buying on line you usually have to buy one in person, and get to try on different colors and styles-then for your second wig you can buy online. Synthetic wigs have to be replaced every few months but a good human hair wig can last much longer if you condition it regularly.

Hello everyone, thank you so much for your replies. I will check these shops you have mentioned but I am thinking of wearing a human hair wig. However, I'm discouraged only because of the cost. I haven't even tried or seen it and yet I heard that it's extremely expensive. My hair is thinning at an alarming rate unfortunately, and it seems that Rogaine doesn't seem to be working well for me. Therefore I've decided to wear a wig that is identical to my natural hair before the onset of Alopecia.

How much does the human hair wig cost at Gabi's Wig in Toronto? For black curly hair?

I looked at a chin length one that was $1700. Allegria would be the same. You should check out the other suggestions because those salons might have a better price.

Gabi's was for very good quality European hair that had been coloured. So many women now want European hair because it is softer-it has had less chemical processing than Asian hair.  On Wigsupport.com, there was a member who went to a distributor for Milano wigs-she didn't end up buying one but she did post pictures. Those wigs are about $800 for hair that is European but coloured so not what is called virgin hair.

The distributor of Milano in Toronto is a small salon   so not a lot of stock but you can try on colours and styles and then order from their main store in the US They are

Unfortunately I think with human hair wigs you have to make some appts to "just look" and be firm with yourself that you won't be impulsive-a lot of looking but in the end you might be happier with your choice than if you go to only one salon. And it does seem to be easier if you are not looking for light blond hair.

Curly hair is not that easy to get either-some wigs are wavy but not curly.  I think that is a question you might want to start a new thread on. For example-if you want black curly hair you could buy either Asian or Indian hair-so then your challenges are to get hair that is still with the cuticle (that is called Remy)-not processed with chemicals-but maybe from a vendor who has or can add a permanent (curly) wave to it. Good luck

Really, I was hoping that black curly hair would be available. I heard that Gabi's Wig has a HUGE selection, so when I stop by there, I'll ask about the curly hair.

I have one question: do you recommend full lace wigs? I don't really have much knowledge regarding this but came across it when I was researching about wigs in Toronto.

I thought I sent a reply to this  but can't see it, so will re send the info. I don't know much about lace wigs-there are members on here who do buy them, often online from China-so if you start a new thread about lace wigs you will get lots of info. In Toronto one salon I know that provides lace wigs and would have either Indian or Asian hair that is curly is Miss MyMy. In fact it may be that lace wigs can be made up in curly hair more easily that traditional wigs.

Hi Mariam,

I can't comment on the full-lace wigs but I wanted to comment on the curl pattern.  Although this is difficult, do try to be open to moving away from curly hair as curlier and very wavy hair tends to become knotty and bunch up around the nape of the neck area in many wigs that do not have unprocessed European hair or in those hairpieces that have been chemically processed (even slightly processed).  I experienced this in previous hairpieces that I had purchased from my local wig shop here in the Peg.

Good luck in your search.

Jenn

You can try a synthetic wig, or a human hair mix wig. They can go for $40. to a few hundred dollars.  The inexpensive places I've gone to are: Beauty Supply Warehouse, Just Incredible, or Discount Beauty Supply. look up the location near you on www.411.ca.

Good luck.
