I've only been AU for 5 months (It started as AA 17 months ago).  I've been wearing $150 synthetic wigs, and I'm getting tired of them already.  I have been considering getting a vacuum wig, but I didn't know if I should wait to see if my hair grows back!

I kind of feel like it will be Murphy's Law that my hair will grow back once I order the wig.  I am already experiencing eyelash regrowth and very light hair over my lip (which I now have to wax, which annoys me to no end because it's so unfair!)

So...when did you decide to get an expensive wig?

I've had AU for 9 years - with one full regrowth (whilst pregnant) and then total fallout again. I'm just considering more expensive solutions - hence checking out this website. I'd love to go swimming in 'hair'. Up until now I've had synthetic mono wigs, I've enjoyed changing styles regularly but maybe I should invest in something longer lasting, not sure?
Hi Aimee...

Before my regrowth, I had decided that I would have to be bald for 1 year before I would consider a very expensive wig. Even then, I was more thinking of one from Joseph Paris in New York rather than a Vacuum wig. I figured I could get three of those for the cost of one vacuum wig, which seemed to be a better use of my money.
HI Aimee, I think it is important to each individual to make that important decision. I know I used to wear the synthetic wigs, once you purchase a European or any 100% human hair wig, you will see that there is nothing that can compare with the feeling it gives you. If you get a nice one, others will never be able to tell it is not your own hair. It truly changed my life for the better. Make sure you have a beautician you can trust to cut and style it. Dee
Aimee...i got human hair at 2 months in. literally only a few people know i have AGA. i tried synthetics but the hair i found matched mine exactly..texture and all. i have seen some great synthetics on others but my hair was never that shiny and perfect. $900 was what i spent the first time and that lasted over a year. you know its funny because i thought the same thing ..the minute i spend alot of money my hair will come back but oh the peace i had with the human hair was worth it and my hair never did come in again. i wish you well with your decision.
The fraying is the biggest problem I have with synthetics, which is what is prompting me to move to human hair.
Joe Paris has described in detail his steamer technique. Look in his posts or filter for the word steam or steamer. It works!

After I went around and tried on every wig I could get my hands on. My Russian hair wigs are weightless...like there is just nothing on my head. I need that feeling. Once I felt that, there was no going back. My family's all Russians and Roumanians so that's the kind of hair I was born with. I need very low density on a custom cap and I'm good to go. There's no stock cap (even adjusted and altered) that fits as well as my custom caps ..I'm most comfortable in one that fits my head like a lambskin glove fits the hand.

Most people are not as sensitive to all the cap sensations like I am which is a good thing.I wish I wasn't. For me it was finding the right cap with hair that swings. Asian hair always costs less, but for me it's too heavy to have movement. I use my older Asian hair for a winter day when it might be half under a hat anyway.

Anytime I want more curl, wave or fullness out come the steam rollers. Otherwise, I like my hair pretty flat and I can get that best with my more $$$ wigs because of the way they are made and the quality of the hair.

Hope that helps.

Splurging means being willing to pay the price for getting the best product, not just paying a higher price. You can't assume that a higher-priced product is necessarily a better product. Do your homework and ask questions.
Please visit this discussion.

It is asking the people on AW to tell me what questions you think wig wearers should be asking.

This is the first step in making the wig buying process safer and more honest for consumer and retailer alike.

My most expensive wig is $54. It's a 14 inch long synthetic wig with bangs-- that I don't wear. I can't afford one that's higher priced than $54 and I actually hate wearing cheap wigs. I've seen some human hair lace front wigs that are very beautiful. I know what I would be willing to pay and it's not what their asking. So until then, I will rock the bald look 95% of the time.

Russian hair is supposed to be very good quality, so that's what I've ordered for my very expensive hair bonding system that will be molded to fit my head exactly. I hope I'm not disapointed again, but I did my homework and I think I made a good choice this time.
